I'm going to start a general thread about travelling by dolmus over in the Travelling to Turkey Forum - but this one is about the language needed to travel effectively by dolmus.

We have already discussed a little about this in this thread but there is of course more to travelling than being able to address the driver!!!

So - how do we say we want to stop and get out in between dolmus stops. I have seen inecek var for this but that doesn't seem to make much sense as it is in third person.

If we are travelling in a dolmus and want it to stop - above the noise of general chatter could we say:
pardon şofer, burada durdurabilüz lütfen çünkü şimdi inmek istiyorum
or would durabilüz be better?

bod im sure you will attract the drivers attention

opps hes coming

what background is that then,i await you response

are there many alternative clubs about

when will you go there ?

These 2 are used the most, according to my experience:


1. Müsait bi yerde?

It is short form of 'Müsait bir yerde indirir misiniz' which would mean 'Would you stop at a convenient place'. If you say this, the driver will stop and open the door as soon as possible, maybe after 10 or 20 meters. If you prefer the driver to stop at some specific place that is 100m away, you may prefer 'Işıklarda indirir misiniz?' or just 'Işıklarda' which would mean 'At the traffic light' or 'Benzincide' which would mean 'At the gas station'. 'Geçitte indirir misiniz?' is used a lot.

2. Durakta indirir misiniz?

This is used when you want to get off at the next stop. It can be 300m away or even more, you can still use it. You might want to use it when on highway. Sometimes (when on highway) the driver will ask 'İnecek var mı' (Is there someone who will get off) or he will just say the name of the stop loudly. Then you should answer with 'Var' (There is) if this is the stop you want to get off at. If noone reacts, he may not slow down much when passing by the station, and if at that moment you say 'İnecek var' or something similar, he might get angry.


There are some other interesting situations. If you want to draw attention of the driver when you want to pay, you will probably say 'Alır mısınız?' (Would you take) or if the price can vary you will say 'Bi(r) tane Bostancı' (One Bostancı ). If someone gives you some money and tells you something, you will forward the money to the next person in the direction of the driver and repeat the phrase you have just heard, you can expect to hear something like 'Bi(r) tane Kadıköy uzattırabilir misiniz?' (One for Kadıköy, can you pass it on?).
