merhaba, yusuf!
nice topic
marriage is something having deep roots in the culture and civilization and all the difference comes from the way the accent is put whether on the individual (west value) or on the community (islam). The western society values more the individual and the independence and that is why the accent is on "I" and on "I can do this by myself", "I can be on my own". In Islam, community plays an important role and the individual is seen mainly as part of the community, of its traditions and values. Marriage is one of these and the indivisdual must follow it. That is why "being single" is sth strange.
More, the west meakes no difference between HE and SHE (the equality of rights), therefore it comes natural for a woman be be on her own, whereas in Islam, the accent is obviously put on man, and without HIM she cannot be imagined as being able to cope with all the challanges of life...

İ agree with you in the main idea, but i don't agree with you in how you apply it .
İ agree with you that İslam value the community, but at same time,it doesn't mean it reduce or take off from the individual or independence values.
İslam gave freedom to the individual,in a limit that it doesn't hurt others,or the community as well.
And again,i don't agree with you, ofcourse İslam gave the equality of rights between men and women.
Please, don't mix between İslam and Traditions in some countries !
When we see that in the West men and women work at same position,at same job,but at same time, men take wages more than women, just because they are men
Do we say that its because of Christinity ?!!
Do we say then that is because Christinity don't give equal rights to both men and women ?!!
That is not true, and away from being logic too !
When you say in Islam, the accent is obviously put on men,you know where or how or what ?
İt put on men in their relationship with women,it put more duties on men,and gave more rights to women, that is bad ?
That means they are not equal ?
İts the woman RİGHT,that the man afford all her expenses, her right, not a favor.
Her right that,he afford shulter, food, clothes, everything she need to live, without she pay anything in this prossess
İts his duty, and if she got a money of her own,its her OWN money,he doesn't have any right in it,except if she choose to give
And that is a favor from her to him !
And her duty,is to take care of her family,'note that i said her family, not her house'
İf he afford,he should bring her someone to help in the house work, maybe more than one too accourding to his capability,if he doesn't afford, she do the house work as a FAVOR,not her duty, and he should help too .
That is what İslam say,but is it really what's happening in real ?!
Same as men and women does not get same wages!
İf you can say this is Christinity values,we can say that is İslam values !!!
But then ,that would be fare from the truth !
And for women to be able to cope with life challenges without him
Ofcourse she can,and İslam doesn't ever said she cann't,there were, and are lots of single women in the İslamic world, and they do cope very well with the challanges of life !
İ know many myself !
But again seperate between İslam and traditions, maybe somethings not acceptable from the community in some countries, maybe its acceptable in others, with different degrees.
But in the end,its STİLL Traditions,NOT İSLAM !

merhaba!
sorry if I could not be clearer in what I wanted to say....
I refered to "Islam" in a broader sense: not as religion, but as "culture and civilization" (do not be so critical with me; after all Samuel P. Hungtington wrote a book on the clash of civilizations- West and Islam

What a great subject! I find myself agreeing with ALL of the above (in part)!
I think it is a good thing that women are no longer dependent on men for security and can live their lives the way they chose. However, I think things are becoming a little bit extreme and will reverse the freedom that all enjoy. The "ME" generation that is growing up around us don't appear to be any happier. The constant quest for material satisfaction and the selfishness of these self-titled "Princesses" is an endless quest and their demand for money does not equal their willingness to work hard for it!! The ambition of many seems to be to "become famous" or "marry someone rich"! They are taking for granted the freedom that many women worked so hard for and regressing back to dependency
I also agree with you Canli, we shouldn't confuse Islam with tradition.
