I only had a quick glance at these, but it looks like BBC gives a variety of nice courses.

The case of english is rather different than that of French. We were and are at the outset surrounded by english. Anyway, yesterday I glanced at the french alphabet. That's all. I haven't yet started to learn it.

I learnt French and can speak it quite well, but I am rusty now as I have not had any practice lately. You need to learn verbs and tenses, to be (être) and to have (avoir) as these are used for most of the language in some shape or form. I find French quite easy, but then I also learnt Spanish which is similar but even easier. Then when you know those you can have a go at Italian!!
The advice above about the BBC is good. The lessons are good for basic. If you can sign up at evening school even better as you get to practice then.

libralady,
Thank you very much for your advice and showing some direction. I appreciated it much. I think you are right, étre and avoir seem to be the most basic elements of french.
Again, thank you.
p.s. May I contact with you as I learn french?

i have learnt french for many years and can speak it reasonably well.
as libralady, the 2 verbs "être" and "avoir" are important.
the sentence structure in french is quite similar to english most of the time.
if you can find a class somewhere near you, that would probably be the best bet.
bonne chance cyrano!!

gezbelle- bonne merci (ou merci bonne) pour votre wishing me bonne chance. I am planning to study french by myself just like I did and am doing with English.
bianca- French is my favourite language too. I melt when hearing it being talked. And merci bonne pour votre offering me help. I will certainly resort to your help the minute I start studying. Now I am in the process of picking up some advices and french resources.
Merci!
