OK I think we’ve had enough of this mad situation over here.

Where are you dear admins? Don’t you care about what your creation is turning into? This was supposed to be a website that was built out of love and it’s main purpose was to help people learn the Turkish language and collect info about Turkia and it’s culture. And the general forums, were like a meeting place for the members, where they could get to know each other better through a lighthearted humorous chat, or through friendly debates. Is that what TC is now????

Let me tell you what TC is NOW:

A low quality translation center, with hostile members who don’t lose a chance to argue with each other about almost everything. Even the most naïve comment, is enough to make members attack each other. The Turkish members are keeping their mouths shut and the foreign ones are chatting about their own countries. I m sick and tired of reading about U.S. and U.K. in a forum that is supposed to be about TURKIA! The only pieces of Turkish poetry and literature that I can see lately, are the parts of the poems that a Turkish lover is sending to his British girlfriend and their translation is requested. The only news we are reading about Turkia, are the bombing attacks. On the other hand, I can read a variety of posts about crime in the US, pervert political parties in Holland and so on. Should I start posting the news from Greece as well??? Yeah I know this is an international community with members from all over the world. But all those members should have one common purpose: to learn about Turkia. If not, then they should be members of some other site. There are billions of them out there in the net.

What I ve also noticed and only ONE member so far had the courage to point out (thx Robin), is that some of the newest members of TC don’t even know how to speak and write their own language (i.e. English), while they try to teach the rest of us how to speak and what to think. I am Greek and I m trying to learn a 3rd language, through a forum that is “speaking” in another language that also is not my own. It’s so difficult, but still, when I write, I try to write correctly and with the fewest mistakes possible. I find it insulting, when I see a British member, using words like “nuffing” for nothing, “I no” for I know etc etc. Why do I have to be careful when I type but they don’t? At least, I am the one who should be tolerated, since I m trying to speak and learn in a language that is not my real one. For God’s sake show some respect to all those who are trying to learn something here.

I am the one (together with my twiny and a few more) who used to ride the forums and spoil them. But even then, we were only trying to tease and light up the atmosphere using some good (I hope) humor. But even in my worst nightmares, I couldn’t imagine what is happening in TC these past few months, and more intensively the past few weeks. Fun is good. Nobody likes a site strictly educational and with no freedom of speech. But this is too much!

I would love to finish this post, with saying that I m withdrawing from this site (not that anyone would care….). But I won’t do it. Not just yet. I’ve loved this place like my home and I’ve considered the members of it like a family for too long, to quit just like that. But please! DO SOMETHING before it’s too late!

Thanks in advance
Sophie

(By the way, I m posting this message in the announcements' forum, only because I saw that admin is the only moderator here. Maybe this way I can catch his attention)

*****oooffff yaaaa! Had to get these off my chest!******

I have had such mixed emotions about this site recently and at first started to be drawn into the arguing before a few people pointed out there is no point in arguing with such people! I have also tried staying away, and now my current course is to ignore and continue to try to use this site lol!

But...TC has lost something and does not feel special anymore .

I totally agree...

I remember a time when if anything political was mentioned, it was instantly deleted. Endless Turk-Kurd debates were deleted, even though the debates didnt include any offensive language, were well written and quite informative.

Now however, the site seems to have a new 'anything goes' policy, and the forum (and chat room) is full of political debates. Iam not against a good debate, and I find some of the issues brought up quite relevant, but when people (especially women) are being told to 'sht their mouth ladie..and get a new hairdo..or do sm cookin', I think that its unacceptable!

I even doubt whether the admin will even read this thread nevermind respond to it, they certainly dont bother responding to any complaints or private messages so why should this thread be any different?

@ Pandora: every time I ask the admin something by pm I get an answer, so nothing to complain about.

About the topic of Sophie: I hope I am not one of those spoilers. If I am (being a newbee I do not know the history), let me know, I can learn.

What I find a pity is that most of the topics are about translations of sms. The parts about travelling and Turkey itself are much less used. Those are the parts I am interested in.

And about using English, sorry it is not my mother tongue so I will make mistakes. I apologize for that.

İ agree with you sophie too,
İ'm not an old member of the site,i've joint at July 2006 or something.
But yes,the site has changed so much in those past weeks,as if no one is able to accept a word from the other anymore.
Even slight objection become an issue!
No one accepting the fact that everyone is entitled to his opinion, and that must not be an issue between each other here.
And the language of the debate had become so low sometimes i find it hard even to comment,i just shake my head wondering what's happened !

But i don't mind read about other countries news too,or debates, but in organized manner,at off the topics Forum, not in a translation thread which in the end it turns into an endless argument !

The site need to be organized again, and to remember we are here to help each other, not to fight with each other.

İ hope admin do something about it,for the Moderators seem a bit busy to follow what's happening .

İ don't believe i would have say this, but i really miss reading this 'This thread has been LOCKED'

I don't think there is anything wrong with giving your opinions here or having a friendly debate. I think it's how it is conveyed or perceived that is the problem. However, I do think there needs to be a seperate forum set up for this. On many of the Turkish sites I belong to, they do have a forum for religion and politics. I personally gain tons of knowledge from hearing about different religions and political views. By setting up a seperate forum for this, if you aren't interested by the content, you don't have to participate. "It's better to debate a question without settling it, than to settle a question without debating".

I agree with you Teaschip, there is nothing better than a good intelligent debate BUT debating is NOT verbally abusing people who do not agree with you or telling them they are too immature to post their opinion. People are behaving like spoilt children who will tolerate no opinion but their own! Three examples from recent posts:-

(1) Why u not accpt tht u r such a loser? why u nt go kitchen to make a cup of tea? take it easy ladie i enjoy which pple got brain like you or like yours.

(2) Im not sure that ur post has much relevance here..the messages are good and yet pathetic..ummm interesting..i can tell u r 16 years old..this was a lighthearted discussion..i was born here..im entitled to stay where i like..perhaps u should mature a little before feeling the need to respond quite so drastically.

(3) If im 5 years old why u keep on argue with me.. so long time ago i told you.. dont answer mypost if im idiot.. why u cant control urlsf.. ladie you got sick problem.. 1 week bfre i said leave me alone but u still around me.. pls ladies go chnage your hair style or today cook dffrnt food at least u wont feel boring..

@ aenigma: I would love to discuss politics and religion (though I am not religious myself - I am an agnost). With you I do think a separate forum is needed for that and, more important, quite good moderation to prevent those things you quoted.

There is nothing wrong with discussing politics and religion, except from the fact that if you don't know how to discuss, then tempers get hot and people get nasty. I never agreed with this specific rule of this site, but cause of the reasons I mentioned above, I ended up thinking that it was probably a wise one. What I ve been reading lately in the forums, came to justify my thoughts. Anger, insults and narrow mindness were all over the posts and the result is really disappointing, not to say horrible.

As for learning about different countries than Turkia, again is acceptable. But this is a Turkish forum. And when the posts about Turkish culture or language are dramatically decreasing, then it gets annoying to read new posts about other countries in a Turkish forum.

Like someone mentioned above, I signed up here to learn about Turkia. About places to travel and traditions to learn about. Not to debate about Bush and Sadam. Yes right. I can just ignore those threads and that's what I have been doing for months. I became a vegetable, typing only 'songs for my love', as there was nothing else interesting to do here. But I can't ignore those threads anymore, cause suddenly they are EVERYWHERE!

Anyway, since the freedom of speech in this website is so much that it becomes annoying, I thought that I could also post my humble opinion.

Like twinny says...I rest my case...

I absolutely second your opinion sophie.Since the old memebers of the club and the moderator is somehow missing recently everything became such a mess.Everybody knows which aenigma is refering to but since we dont have the power and its beyond our dignity to deal with those people we can just bear their offends and rude remarks. Before couple of days I too had a minor argument with the so called member and decided to stop entering this site. Then after that I reconsidered my decisson because i thought:Well,I guess if we all do like this the site we soon be `polluted` by rude people and will extinguish. So better not pay attention to small talks, keep our head straight and go on.Best regards to everybody who loves this country and respects all her friends!

I agree with teaship...it is important to debate political issues.

I am a 'new' member and like it here. I love to hear others' opinions. I think that a separate forum would be lovely to participate in, if it will keep the 'old' members happy.

In my mind, Turkey is the place where the east and the west meet. Turks have found a way to blend and embrace both ways of thinking. I think a Turkish website is the perfect place for debates. No great culture can exist without hearing all sides. As a country Turkey has managed to do this. There is an almost perfect balance in Turkish culture. If you walk in the streets of Istanbul, you will hear church bells and calls to prayer. You will see women in burkas and women in western cloths. I have read a lot of posts lately and many of them are very politically charged but people need an outlet to express themselves and nobody is forced to respond. The world is a crazy place. We are all on this site for one reason..........in some way we ALL love Turkey. For whatever reason, so many people from so many cultures have one thing in common and I think that is beautiful.

I agree with you 100%. Well said, these are my exact sentiments!

Dear Rain, I think that you got all of it wrong. You are right in one thing though. That admin offered us a miracle here, by creating this website. And this website is what we are trying to save. No one is against debates. And no one is against learning things from a different culture than his own. That’s why we are all here. To learn about Turkia and it’s people and to understand, adapt or reject parts of Turkish culture, according to our own traditions and beliefs. Cultural information is exchanged here since the day this website appeared.

No one is forced to agree with what is been said in the forums, and never all of us agreed in something. Each one had his own opinion and we were never afraid to tell it. Discussions and disagreements were always arising, but we knew how to respect each other, even when our beliefs were completely different.

As you might have noticed, I m not that kind of person, to be going around, insulting the others. I’ve always respected all the members (except from one but thank God he is not around for quite some time now) and that’s why I ask the same respect from them. As for you, even when everyone else was against you, I saw a right point in what you said and wasn’t afraid to point it out. So please don’t talk to me about respect or objectivity.

You say that I m from Greece, so probably I don’t want to learn about other countries. But hey, the fact that I am here defending a Turkish website, isn’t already proving the opposite?

What I said, is that learning about U.S. and U.K is something that is acceptable, but to a point. If I wanted to learn about Bush or Blair, I would visit an American or a British forum. I wouldn’t be asking about them here. Moreover, if I needed to hear about crime in the U.S. I would visit the CNN’s web page. Wouldn’t that be wiser? It’s like turning your TV to a fashion channel, to learn about the wild life in the African jungle.

As for my comments about the way people write, I m sorry but I m not going to apologize. I respect every foreign member who is trying to learn either English or Turkish. But I cannot accept that a British citizen doesn’t bother to spell correctly words like “nothing” or “I know”, when I try hard to type right in a language that is not my own. And please consider that this is a “language class” for foreigners that want to learn Turkish, or for Turkish people that want to learn English. The kind of language that is used by some of the members here, is helping none of the above.

Rain canim, everyone is allowed to talk about everything he wants. Every little piece of information is useful and appreciated. I just thought that since we are in a Turkish forum, it would be better to share info about Turkia.

And by the way, the main reason why I started this thread, was because lately I am feeling uncomfortable, watching all the members arguing and insulting each other, something that is really strange when it comes to TC.

I love and appreaciate this website more than you can ever imagine. And that's why I took the right to write such a message. If not, I would keep posting songs for my love only and maybe I could just join an argument. I m not a saint you know. I also know how to swear and I do it amazingly well . I just thought that this place as well as it's members, deserves some more respect.

Dear Rain,
Despite your "warnings" I would like to express my opinion on your post, if that is ok with you? I do understand your frustration at media exagerations about terrorists. All I ask is that you PLEASE credit us with some intelligence. The majority of people DO NOT trust or believe everything the media say, and like to form their own opinions. I too would be very angry to read such comments about muslims.

I would also just like to explain that you should not judge all members of this site as "love struck" teenagers who only wish to talk about their boyfriends, do our hair or cook meals! You are judging female members of this site by the translations you do - please don't do this. I, and may others, find these sexist comments offensive and degrading.

I truly believe that the majority of people on this site have a common love of Turkey, it's culture and it's traditions. Those who may not are usually just "passers by" looking for a quick translation to their boyfriend. All I ask is that you don't judge us all this way.

Offf I despair of English schools these days...

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME:-

Describes the behavior of kidnap victims who, over time, become sympathetic to their captors. The name derives from a 1973 hostage incident in Stockholm, Sweden. At the end of six days of captivity in a bank, several kidnap victims actually resisted rescue attempts, and afterwards refused to testify against their captors.

Victims begin to identify with their captors initially as a defensive mechanism, out of fear of violence. Small acts of kindness by the captor are magnified Rescue attempts are also seen as a threat, since it's likely the captive would be injured during such attempts.

no claims to being expert on this syndrome. It comes from I think a bank robbery where the customers and some employees were taken hostages. In like, I believe 24hrs, all the hostages became 'brain washed' and began to identify with the bank robbers. So when they were finally released, the hostages began to defend their attackers and even funded part of their legal defense. All this took place in Stockholm.

Sophie

Absolutely! About time this came to an end. What started as an honest and truthful appraisal of what is happening here has once again become a completely uncessary attack of various members here. As for the spelling business, I hate text talk, the use of abbreviations used for text messages, but please do appreciate that some people cannot spell for one reason or another which could be dislexia. I had this pointed out to me on anothe siter I used to belong to.

Tolerance is a virture, so please use it and take head of Sophies' original post.

I have been a member of this site for neally a year now and have made some very good friends, but i too agree that over the last few weeks it does seem to have gone down hill.
I enjoy reading all the forum letters and enjoy talking in the chat room, but sometimes there are certain members when they are together in the chat room appear to take delight in starting arguements and putting females down.Sometimes just picking on one person and being really insulting to them.

Here is some food for thought. I have been a member nearly a year as well. The first week I was at this site, I was ridiculed, bullied and was slammed for the country I live in. Well, believe me this was a terrible first impression I had of this site. Who the heck wants to spend time at a site when you are personally attacked. I also realized that at the end of day, I couldn't hold ill feelings for someone, whom I don't even know. Really, does it matter in the whole scheme of life, to hold so much anger inside. I didn't intend or was looking to make friends here. But then coming here day after day and reading and chatting with people I started to develop relationships here. I personally have broaden my knowledge from reading people's posts, whether I agree with them or not. Yes, most of the time they are translations from females to their boyfriends. And yes, most of the time I still can't translate them. So I pick a post that either I have knowledge about or can add some feedback too. I happen to think there are other people who add value to this site, other than translating Turkish. Yes, I understand this is a Turkish Language site. But for me it's more. I won't apologize for this and you don't have to agree with me. But who am I or who are you to dictate what gets posted here. I think that's why we have an admin to regulate this. Don't get me wrong, I understand there needs to be rules. Rules are put in place, because of the few that abuse them. I don't think anyone should tolerate verbal abuse here and that's why you send your complaint to the admin of this site. He seems to be a very level minded person that addresses the issues when need be. However, he doesn't get involved with the everyday events at this site. Which quite honestly he shouldn't have to. We should all get along or have enough respect for each other's post's and opinions, even if you don't agree with them.

Let me or Admin know who are the troublesome people, give some examples (messages, chat logs) and we'll take care of that. It's impossible for us to always know what's going on on the site but if you help us, we can take care of things. I think Admin posted a message once asking people to inform him of problems in the forums, please, it's really important and helpful that you let us know when there are issues and not always expect us to know everything that's going on here.
Also, thank you to all of you who care that this site is good. It's thanks to your effort that we can be so good .

Dear Susie, I think I should draw your attention to Forum Rule No. 11 :-

Susie K you have, on 3 occasions, broken Section 11 of the Rules by talking about beverages. I shall have no alternative but to report you to Admin. As we speak, the TC Police are travelling to your home to question you, and, in the event you are found guilty, you will be sentenced to 1 month of continuous SPAM !

I agree with what a lot of people are saying here...

Perhaps things could be controlled a little better, but on the other hand, if some people want to post abusive or silly immature messages of little relevance to the purpose of this site, maybe we should not give those people the satisfaction they seem to get through receiving a response.

I guess the majority of people signed up for this site to interact with others about different aspects of Turkey, be it the language or the culture-although some seem to have moved onto interactions based upon irrevelevant topics; therefore if those posting inappropriate messages are ignored, perhaps they will realise that the interaction with other members which they hoped for will discontinue.

It is a shame that a minority group of 'negatives' is ruining it for others....

...On the contrary, this site has been really useful for me. Although I only know very basic Turkish, the grammar sections have been great for me and I have enjoyed leisurely looking through literature and reading posts about different cultural aspects. So I want to show my gratitude for the positive things this website brings!...

çok teşekkürler!

Quoting Pandora:

Catwoman - last month I sent numerous complaints and chat logs to one of the admin, but I got no reply. I have since had to get a new screen name.

Can you please send it again? I haven't seen any messages from you, I'm not sure if Admin did. If possible, please let me know what happened. Thank you.
