Hi all,
I recently signed up to SKYPE and so my girlfriend we both used it for first time only a few days ago, now I understand there is a charge on my phone bill and it is not actually free at all. She lives in Istanbul and I live in the United Kingdom can someone help us a SKYPE user would be great as I have posted on their forums to no avail. We would like to use this service for our contact but like everything in this world the SKYPE slogan 'The whole world can talk for free' is not true. Any help really appreciated thanks

I use skype in the UK and have not paid anything yet!! Why not use MSN as that IS free. You can talk, have a web cam or just write to each other.

How come? Do they know your phone number?
You can call a regular phone line using SKYPE, in that case you should pay to SKYPE, but you cannot call without paying first. I used it to call USA and it's unbelivably cheap. I paid €8 6 months ago and I still have €3 in my SKYPE account. I say maybe I talked more than 6 hours by now. But if you call Turkey using SKYPE it's much more expensive than calling USA.

Oh yes, I forgot to say, computer to computer should be free. If you skype to a land line or mobile phone then there will be a charge. Hope this answers.

Hi,
Thanks all for the replies libralady we have used MSN and really found that good but Skype will enable us to talk cheaper than phoning. I phone my girlfriend using a telephone service that is so far (U.K.) 5p a minute to landlines and 15p a minute to mobiles that is it that is the charge on my phone bill nothing more nothing less just the stated price. My question and thanks for helping is how does Skype make their money? I am still unsure where the catch is and exactly how much or if I will get charged any hidden amount. I have a Skype account but not paid any subscription fee Nesrin has the same so is that Skype to Skype?
Thanks

If you are talking computer to computer then there is no charge. There is a small fee if you are calling a landline or a mobile phone, but to enable you to do this you have to buy credit.

Hi,
Thanks Christine does that mean there is a number you as a Skype member uses to call each other through the computer? I have not bought any credit yet and just want to feel safe in knowing there is no huge bill waiting me

If you use skype to skype it is free.If you need to call a landline or a mobile you need to use skype out.You use use your user name to connect. If you go to your skype and click onto help it explains everything to you

I've been using Skype and Skype Out for a long time and, like it has already been said, it is free when you call a computer, except for the regular fee you'd pay anyway for your internet connection. To use Skype Out, you have to buy credits in advance, using your credit card for example. The charges are really low (I pay less for a minute of international calls than I'd pay for home calls on my mobile). Although sometimes the connection isn't perfect, it's a really good and cheap way to stay in touch with the world

Skype is really good the only pain with it is, same as msn I guess is that the other person has to be connected at that time!
You end up texting to say go on it now!

Actually, Susie,if you have Skype Out then the other person doesn't need to be online, you can call on their mobile or home phone. And it's dirt cheap

Why dont you invest in a phonecard?
I think there is one called I-Phone where you can talk for 1000 minutes (landline to landline) for only 5 pounds!
Dont use your mobile to phone from though, as it still charges you..
You can even phone a turkish mobile from a uk landline and have 500 minutes for 5 pounds.
Im planning to get one too Im guessing you can get them from offlicenses and that?
