The name Fener comes from Greek "Fanari" meaning lantern. During the city's Byzantine period, there was within the district a columnar monument, topped with a lantern.
After the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Fener district was home to most of the Greeks who remained in the city. The Greek inhabitants of Fener were called Phanariotes. Since the fall of the Ottomans most of the Greek Orthodox population of Istanbul has emigrated, but characteristic architecture still reminds to their presence.
