Basilica Cistern- second medusa head
Basilica Cistern- second medusa head
This picture shows the second medusa with the head on sideway. In another version of the legend it is said that Medusa was a girl who was very proud of her beauty. Both her and goddess Athene were in love in the same time with Perseus, the son of Zeus. But Athene became jealous and she turned Medusa's beautiful black hair into a shape of dangerous snakes. Then every person who looked at Medusa had his head cut with a stone. When Perseus found out that Medusa was bewitched and that she could cut off men's head with stones, became victorious by turning men into stones. From that time on,it is said that the Byzantium swords have a Medusa head on their pommels. (Location: Istanbul)
