West Balkans becomes visa-free for Turkey
All the West Balkans has become a visa-free region for Turkish visitors as the latest visa exemption agreement signed by Turkey and Serbia came into effect a couple of days ago.

All the West Balkans has become a visa-free region for Turkish visitors as the latest visa exemption agreement signed by Turkey and Serbia came into effect a couple of days ago.

Turkey´s peace-focused policies in the Balkans yield to positive results as countries of the region solve their bilateral problems thanks to Turkey´s mediatory efforts and keep opening their doors to Turkey, a country they describe as a "super power" both in economic and political terms, officials told AA on Wednesday.

Serbia has become the latest country that stopped implementing visa procedures for Turkish citizens, following Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo.

The visa exemption agreement between Turkey and Serbia, which was signed on July 12, 2010 as part of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan´s visit to this country, has taken effect at border gates 4 days ago, officials said.

Commenting on the agreement´s taking effect, Turkish Ambassador in Belgrade Ali Riza Colak said Serbia had a remarkable potential both in terms of economic opportunities and tourism.

"Lifting of visas with Serbia will provide major advantages especially for our businessmen and citizens who live in European countries and travel to Turkey via land route," Colak said.

The ambassador noted that Turkish businessmen would be able to pay one-day visits to Serbia and the rest of the region thanks to the latest visa exemption deals.

Colak also said that Serbia had a certain significance for Turks due to its Ottoman history, so the visa exemption agreement would contribute to the country´s tourism as well.

"There is a 500-year-old Ottoman history here. A journey to this region will be like experiencing a history book about the Ottoman empire," he said.

Speaking to AA, Serbian State Minister Sulejman Ugljanin also stated that mutual lifting of visas by Turkey and Serbia would contribute remarkably to international friendly
relations and economic cooperation.

Germany looks cautiously to visa ruling

Germany is looking cautiously to a court ruling delivered by a Munich court early this week that liberates visa requirements for Turkish nationals during their travels to the European Union member state for tourism reasons.

“We have taken note of the decision,” diplomatic sources told the Hürriyet Daily News.

Germany is examining the court judgment, which came after both Turkey and the EU announced that the two had come closer to concluding the readmission agreement, whose approval would in return bring easier visa procedures for Turkish nationals.

Diplomatic sources, however, ruled out any change in the visa procedures for the time being, which means visa requirements imposed on Turkish nationals would continue.

Germany’s Munich Administrative Court approved Wednesday an earlier European Court of Justice ruling that Turkish nationals can enter Germany during their travels for tourist reasons without being subjected to visa requirements and could stay in the country up to three months without obtaining a residence permit.

Turkey’s Economic Development Foundation, a non-governmental organization which is pressing hard for visa liberation, welcomed the German court ruling Friday. In a written statement, foundation President Haluk Kabaalioğlu said the implementation of the decision by political authorities of the EU member states without delay was very important, while calling on Turkey to harmonize its visa policy with the EU.

Readmission deal set to be finalized in March

Ankara is approaching the issue cautiously because of the German government’s reluctance to remove visa obstacles despite the court ruling while on the other side keeping an eye on the readmission agreement expected to be concluded with the EU next month.

A senior Turkish Foreign Ministry diplomat told the Daily News that the EU Commission was waiting for the authority from the EU Council to sign the agreement with Turkey. The diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, said the commission was expected to get the approval this month and the readmission agreement would most probably be signed in March.

Turkey often criticizes the EU for its reluctance to liberalize the visa regime for Turkish nationals and complains many countries have more lenient visa requirements for travels to EU member states despite not being full members, while candidate Turkey is denied this privilege. Brussels has a number of preconditions for Turkey, including the introduction of biometric passports in line with EU standards and the signing of a readmission deal, which obliges Turkey, a major transit route for illegal immigrants, to tackle the immigrant flow.

Hi I´ve been following the news recently about Turkish Citizens being granted Visa free Travel to Europe in return of Turkey signing a readmission agreement in which Turkey will be expcected to hold illegal immigrants in immigration centres before they are sent back to their native countries. I am in favour of Turkish citizens being given the right to travel freely across Europe as I believe its a human right to have freedom. What are your views on this? Realisticly do you think visa free travel will happen for Turks???
