Moderate earthquake hits Turkish town; no reports of injuries or damage
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- A moderate earthquake shook a small Turkish town near Istanbul but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake on Wednesday had a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and was felt in Istanbul and other nearby towns.

The Kandilli Observatory's seismology center said the quake was centered in the town of Cinarcik, some 30 miles across the Sea of Marmara from Istanbul.

Cinarcik was among the areas devastated when two earthquakes hit northwestern Turkey in 1999, killing about 18,000 people.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the active North Anatolian fault.

Catwoman requests have always been fair and very polite. No doubt about that. Whoever asked her that I should stop posting cartoons, should at least have the courtesy to admit that here on TLC. Waiting.............

Unlicensed construction work in Istanbul's Beyoglu has changed the silhouette of the historical district just over last four years. As if the district has grown taller as a number of hotel buildings there has constructed additional storeys without having the permit. For instance, the Green Park Hotel is eleven storeys while it has a license for just nine. Grand Oztanik Hotel is 3.5 storeys higher than it was supposed to be, with 11 storeys. Chairman of a Turkish cultural and natural watchdog says the area is a protected site and expresses wonder how these hotels were granted work permits.
