Since the Israeli war on Gaza last January, Turkey´s role in Middle Eastern politics has become significantly more prominent.

When Recep Tayyip Erdogan´s Justice and Development (AK) Party took office in 2002, it pledged that it would not forsake its historic, religious and cultural bonds with other Muslim countries.

During the Gaza conflict, the party made good on its promise. Turkey´s government did not hesitate to voice its displeasure at Israel´s military actions, which it said were targeting the civilian population of Gaza.

Last week, the Turkish government demonstrated its loyalties again, banning Israeli warplanes from participating in an international military air exercise.

The Anatolia Eagle exercise has been held since 2001 under the auspices of a Turkish-Israeli military agreement signed in 1996. The war-game usually involves Turkish, Israeli and US troops, and has been seen by Israel as a golden opportunity for its pilots to practise over a much larger air-space than usual.

The Turkish decision raised eyebrows in Israel, where Turkey has long been seen as an ally, and has prompted concerns about future relations between the two countries.

"It raises the question: What direction is Turkish policy taking?" wondered Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, after Turkey´s decision was made public.

Thread: Ask your questions: Turkey torn between East and West

Political commentators debate whether recent events indicate that Turkey is turning away from the West and towards the Islamic world.

During the past few years, the European Union has made it virtually impossible for Turkey make progress with accession talks. Many Turkish media have expressed a sense of rejection at the hands of Europe, especially France, Germany, Austria, and Cyprus.

At the same time, the Turkish government has taken steps to promote a human-rights agenda that is intended to placate the E.U. Various recent reforms have attempted to resolve tensions with the large Kurdish minority in southeastern Turkey.

Almost all of 77 million people in Turkey are Muslim, but signs of Islamic faith are noticeably divorced from everyday life. But a growing number of Turks are joining conservative movements that believe religion should play a greater role in the country’s ethical and moral values. Secular critics brand these religious groups as fundamentalist.

Correspondent Gizem Yarbil and producer Bryan Myers report on how traditional religion and modern democracy are trying to coexist in Turkey today.

Turkish Media Monitor

In a country of political and ethnic turmoil, self-censorship is a common practice among Turkish journalists. Among the major factors that put pressure on journalists are: corporate ownership of media, the economic dependence of some of these corporations on the government, the military’s influence on reportage, and a political atmosphere of heightened nationalism, which is reflected in a criminal law that subjects journalists to prosecution for insulting “Turkishness.” At the same time, some progress toward greater press freedom can be seen in recent years as the number of journalists imprisoned because of their work has sharply declined from the 1990s.

Fikret Bila, a veteran journalist and a columnist at the center-right Milliyet newspaper, says the history of Turkish media is divided into two eras: before and after the 1980s. Before the 1980s, says Bila, news outlets were mainly small newspapers, owned by small companies. But an influx of capital investment, development of more efficient printing technologies, and the foundation of private TV channels made media a growth industry in the 1980s and after.

This growth paralleled a change in the Turkish constitution in 1982, giving the executive branch more power. One way the government used its new authority was to give major media companies economic incentives to grow even further, by investing in non-media businesses.
