Why do you come to TC?

My thoughts...I would love to know yours:
It is obvious that many of us don't come here to learn the Turkish Language and in the wake of recent forums on this site, I find myself wondering....why do I come? I have never felt I was wasting my time on the site, but wonder what is the purpose of my being here? I immediately thought back to my college days. In those days, I was learning about politics, government, religions, ect...and discovering my own power to perpetuate change (or so I thought). The debate team was a perfect outlet for my new found voice of political awareness. Then, after I graduated (and grew up a bit), I realized just how small my voice is and that my voice alone, means very little in the grand scheme of things. As a human living in a democratic society, most of us understand that our opinions only change things if majority agrees and there is money to back it up. I think this site is a release for our inner voices. It is easy to be with people who agree with you all the time but a far better use of our time to try to understand people who are different from us.
As far as the forum rules about not talking about certain things...why? It seems to me that people who truly love Turkey want to understand it completely...not just know about coffee, food, language and carpets. Admin, you should be proud that your site is a catalist for such discussions. Perhaps it is doing more good than a meeting between politicians.

I actually do come here for learning Turkish language skills, and have actually been able to learn to sound less like Tarzan. There are many resources here for that purpose. For instance, I heard about www.winmekmak.com here. The Turkish Dictionary is fantastic, fabulous, wonderful and very useful, I use it often.
One can learn a lot about various aspects of Turkey and Turkish culture. There are many wonderful photos of Turkey, and you can talk with the photographers about the photos they uploaded.
The forum is an interesting place to discuss ideas with an International group, who may or may not agree. Even though there is at times passionate disagreement, as long as it remains civil, dialog is always a good idea.
Great thread Elisabeth...thanks!
Last but not least, this is an entertaining site. Great thread Eli

I initially was here to learn Turkish, but then I had less and less time for it and now I just enjoy talking to people It's fascinating when people from so many different countries and with so many different opinions get together....

A great idea for a thread Elizabeth. I'm sure Admin is very proud of the site which, from what I've read, has evolved a great deal since it's establishment.
You are right about the topics and the rules too. I've even asked if they can be tweaked a little to keep everyone happy. Healthy discussions about current affairs does no harm at all.
I originally joined so that I could learn Turkish because I visit my friends in Istanbul regularly. I must confess I am a coffee addict so I DO want to know about the coffee. It's just nice to compare experiences with other members. But, yes, it is important to learn more of the history of the country and what makes it 'tick' (one reason why I wanted to know about the newspapers on a different thread). I've learned quite a bit just by reading some of the lively discussions. Even the habitually deleted have their role to play in creating a picture of what the current issues are in Turkey.
Of course speaking to Turkish friends is also helpful because they all have different social backgrounds and different stories to tell. And now I have made several good friends on this site, male and female, Turkish and non Turkish, so thanks Admin.

Peace Train your posts always leave me cold! The tone of your posts is so santimonious and self-satisfied that I find myself encouraged to behave like a naughty child to your prim, humourless 'teacher' role.
I realise that you are a very "worthy" member here with a great interest in Turkey and that I am probably in the minority with my opinion but.........HELL!
For my own sanity I am off to have fun elsewhere

I opened my first account in 2004 after having met for real with my (at that time 'internet-) love Kadir. (you can still find it somewhere ). I lost the password and created this one and have been on ever since.
I finished off all the grammar lessons here, I even organized them in word, printed and studied them when I had spare time at school, or in the bus. Just by reading the forum I would pick up on info about living in Turkey and after 2 years, I ended up there, which is now a year ago. The reason to be here as being learning the language, is no longer my main reason.
I am here, to prove all those who hate all Kurdish people WRONG.
I am here, to prove all those who think relationships between 'young naive girls' (yep was 16 and had no idea what I was dealing with!) and Türkiyeli cant work, WRONG.
I am here, to share what I learnt so far and learn from what others know.
I am here, because I hope one day the debates on politics and religion will be allowed
I am here, because in my deepest and most secret held ambitions, one day I hope to teach in Turkey or fill a diplomatic position. Turkey has so many downsides but as least as much opportunities and capacities..
I have been accused, many many times, of being an arrogant dinsiz, and a supporter of PKK. I have, many times, thought of leaving the website. Its just internet, right?
Some members, some discussions, made me feel desperate. I felt like giving my opinions about some 'matters' in Turkey, was like talking to deaf man's ears. It made my blood boil when Youtube got closed down, it pisses me off to see people promote haşema, and I wondered 'Do I wanna be part of that country? Do I want to work so hard, as a woman, and maybe get nothing back in return? Am I an idiot to put effort in talking to deaf mens ears?' Well maybe I am, and I love it!!
I stayed here, for leaving is giving them what they want.
I stayed here, because I hope my thoughts can make a change.
But most of all..
I am not very generous with the word 'friend', but for what it matters, its the kind of people here, that have made me stay. Some are no longer active members (Slavica, Lyndie, Elisa), some keep coming less (Daydreamer, Aslan), and some here just frequently (Aenigma, Catwoman). They are just a few among people that I enjoy to talk with, enjoy to read posts from. I'm happy to have met them, and since Im not generous with the word 'friend', its about time I see you all for some rakı and meze, and become one

Their physical capabilities... age...
their previous fights
but as libralady is interested very much in extreme sports she can be favorite!

You are right AEnigma, of course we can all be as sanctimonious, self satisfied, ironic, sarcastic, cynical, radical, lovely, prim, annoyed, ticked off etc. as we wish and we are all guilty of it.
Just one minor detail, I can't speak for Libralady, but I haven't made NUMEROUS posts detailing my opinion of you. The sad person that I am (and I know I'm not the only one on this site) I decided to look back and I think there are a maximum of 5 posts that may fit the category you mention. Now, 5, hmm 5, could that be classed as a few? Possibly. At best some may say, "no 5 is classed as several", but it most definitely isn't Numerous. But then again I guess we are all also allowed to exaggerate a little from time to time.
Whether we state opinions of others or not is entirely up to our own conscience, as is the manner in which we do it. We have to live with ourselves even if nobody else has to. I must thank you for pointing out this bad habit of mine and I have to tell you I won't be doing it again, you know, giving my opinion of you.
I have seen the light. I don't think there is any need for anyone to give their opinion about anyone else in a post, although it is their right in most cases, as you say. No, I think what all we members say in our posts and the tone we use often gives members a pretty good idea of what the author is about, without someone else trying to do it for them.
Although I am mindful of the fact that there are people around who pretend to be something they're not in chat rooms. I'm thinking of those 60 something old guys who pretend to be 14 year old girls/boys in teen chat rooms. So who could I be? A 25 year old male cross dresser? (not with my legs ). A trapeze artist? (no the heights would send me even dizzier than I already am).
I'll be really brave now and let you choose my alter ego . Maybe it could be the start of a new thread, with a Turkish theme of course. But somehow I think I may not be using the same brand of humour. C'est la vie. We can't all be the same.
Regards
Kim ( ha ha ha yes, this is my name a good Turkish name, no? Also rhymes with Prim. If I ever need to be reincarnated on this site I will return as Prim Kim )

Quoting ciko: Quoting Elisabeth: Quoting ciko: Quoting Elisabeth: Heres the blow by blow commentary:
As the bell rings, its AEnigma...She comes out swinging...and Libra won't give an inch...these ladies are battling it out...the crowd roars... Peace train is screaming, trying to hand Libra some lemons...as AEnigma senses foul play, she picks up Alpha and hurls him in Libra's direction...Libra is undetered but obviously shaken by AlphaFs 'peanut' insult. She grabs a handful of handsom hair and tosses it at AEnigma...she is blinded....there is hair everywhere...it's absolute pandamonia!!! |
is this american wrestling or boxing? |
It's TC...Not American, Turkish, English ect....it is purely TC |
But but why i am not in the fight then ? |
Ciko you can be my corner boy and hand me water and towel p.s if you don't know me I am the older but fitter one, who does not smoke

I think Suis mentioned Libralady to be the favourite so most money will be on her. If I were you I would put your money on AEnigma then have a quiet word with Suis and Libralady to ensure Libralady throws the bout, that way you'll be quids in

Sure I can throw a bout, if large sums of money changes hands, as for fitness, I am in training for my next 10k and will be skiing next week.............. not wishing to brag about my physical prowess for a woman of my age, of course good job I am not younger otherwise there would be no relent!
Elisabeth, waiting for your next report - what gems they were!

Hi to all
I joined this site because of a story that's first stupid but yeah, I used to like this guy he was turkish so anyway I did research about Turkey mainly to impress him ( that's the stupid part)but later I found out that I really like Turkey I think it's a wonderful country and I plan to travel there but fist I want to learn at least a few words some language.
Also to meet good turkish people and get rid of the idea that most of them just want cyber sex ( sorry really no offence)
Anyway I'm learning the numbers now

Hi to all.
I have been here for a few days, but I found this topic only now so I took a chance to introduce myself.
My reasons for learning Turkish are similar to elibrody's but I still keep in touch with my turkish 'crash'. We ended up being good friends and all I know in Turkish I learnt from him (and some from this site, now, i found it).
Moreover, I am Hungarian and it is really funny to realise the similarities between my mother language and Turkish.
It's also great to see that many Turks like my country. I love you too guys.
