Here's the list of the 100 most powerful women in the world according to Forbes. Among them there are two powerful businesswomen from Turkey - Imre Barmanbek and Guler Sabanci!

No, then they are in different lists: worlds billionares, powerful CEO's, powerful celebreties etc. All lists you can find at: http://www.forbes.com/lists/

How dull! I would rather see a list of the Worlds Most Dull Men, or the Worlds Most Salak Men - but I guess those lists would be too long....

(ok sorry, sexist comment - couldn't resist )

They just stop stealing $600 from each of their customers, such as you, and "show me the code", and then I will see Mr. and M$. Gate$ working on so-called charity projects!

speaking about powerful women, the Iron lady goes bronze:

Baroness Thatcher has become the first living ex-prime minister to be honoured with a statue in the House of Commons.
A 7ft 6ins bronze sculpture was unveiled on Wednesday, with her immediate successor John Major and Tory leader David Cameron attending.
Baroness Thatcher, 81, said it was "an honour", adding: "I may be made of iron but bronze will do."
The statue, in the members' lobby of the Commons, depicts the former prime minister in mid-debate, jabbing her finger in the air to make a point.

I think it's interesting that relatively many of the women on the list are from the middle east. Compared to how many that are european, that is.

Not sure what message is being sent to us here, it is rather disconcerting that nearly all the most powerful women are from USA and now doubt, if the truth be known they have a either powerful man or a rich man behind them. It would be better to know how many of these "powerful women" are actually self made.

The part of the US having a disproportionate number of 'powerful' is unfortunate. However, your comment that behind each or many of these women is a 'powerful' or 'rich' man is very sexist and moves in line with old thinking. The same could be said of any woman in any country. I for one would hate that think that in the future my niece or any future daughters I might have would be judged this way. It is absolutely frightening! In today's world while difficult, a woman does not need a man to become powerful! And a woman's value is NOT dependent upon the man that stands next to her!

This is so wise Capoiera! Thank you so much!

To libralady - I absolutely don't agree with you. While there might be a few of those women who became powerful 'along' with their husbands, most of them didn't. Look at Angela Merkel or Condolezza Rice - have you ever heard about their husbands??? I don't even know if they are married at all! Also, you might notice that all of these women have a great education and lots of achievements in their lives, not just one (like being a wife of a rich man).
Yes, it is very sexist to assume such a thing - that any powerful woman has a powerful man behind her and doesn't really make sense either. This might have been the necessity in order for a woman to be successful 100 years ago, but not these days.

Unfortunately in some cases it IS true (for example Mrs Gates & Mrs Clinton ). It is still a huge struggle for women in business and unfortunately there is still a disproportionate amount of men in the "key" positions.

Sexual equality only exists on paper and the women who DO manage to endure the constant sexist remarks from their male colleagues and their inability to stomach the idea of a women giving orders, tend to be very strong,"hard nosed" and career obsessed. Without such "hard" qualities, I agree with Libralady that they only manage success with the help of a man (or at the very least, using his name to get a "foot in the door")

Until men can accept women as equals in the workplace, the situation will continue

yes... that's definitely true. I just wouldn't go as far as Libralady and say that EVERY woman who accomplished something had to do it with the help of a man.

Well along those lines one should add EVERY man as well. Because some other man had to open the door for them as well. The most powerful man in the world, unfortunately, George W. Bush surely one could not think he got to that position without his father.

Absolutely! Incidently, the abuse of women in top jobs is unbelievable. Men are sarcastic and sullen to their faces and in many cases will try to sabotage their successes.

Wherever I have worked I have noticed that all levels of male managers will meet together regularly in a male environment (such as a pub or club) where they release their frustrations by joking about their female colleagues in disgusting and sexual ways.

The poor insecure lambs....

a lot of studies have also been conducted in this area supporting this in various management and employment contexts and locations,
eg. Dreher and the 'glass ceiling' etc.
so in this case i agree...

Yes, absolutely! I have studied engineering and it's unbelievable how insecure men are when it comes to working with women in traditionally male environments. It impinges on their already fragile masculinity .

sorry for spoiling ur serious thread but umm aenigma dont worry you can use the name 'ramayan' whenever u need and u r really unlucky that there have been many females who daydream for this but after reading these words i decided to give u a help to keep you silent....(its secret but i also experienced many times or saw or heard that women are also preferred in many jobs ..we guys are also experiencing same things...but i claim that the male workers are in worse conditiions than their female colleagues.for example while a female worker have a table position in a factory a male worker having harders works but they are paid same ummmmm this is also not good...and we can say many more things..if it must be equal everything must be equal...like military service..i dont think the concept 'equity'' is so equal)

I am afraid that Condoliza Rice is only there because it is convenient for George Bush, woman, black, in power! She is no more than one of his poodles. Remember the conversation had between Blair and Bush, that whould not have been heard?

As for sexism, that is just another word for political correctness gone mad.

By the way, I am a successful business woman, a Senior Manager in a family owned manufacturing company only reporting to the Director, and I have made my own way here.

Do you think today many women are struggling to be equal to men in nature instead of struggling to have equal rights, equal employment opportunities etc?

I don't think women are struggling to be like men in nature ...just that they want their achievements to be recognised in line with their male colleagues, and to receive the according salary.

I can't stand Condelezza Rice, but I have to beg to differ. Her knowledge of several languages, education level, prior accomplishments, leadership ability and public speeching skills should NOT be overlooked because of her political association. Yes, she is a political pond just like EVERY man in G.W. Bush's cabinet, advisory board, and his appointed Supreme Court Judges. To pick on her and say she needed a man because she is a woman is SEXISM! You should also be pointing out that every man associated with G.W.Bush is used by him and has used him to get something as well! Double standards should not be tolerated!
