Im also worried i wont be able to do anything because of their religion views women. Thanks for that advise...looks like most of my holiday will be spent sleeping hehe not 2 bad!! Quite different from tourist areas. I would not recommend you to walk hand in hand. Not that they will hassle you, my experience is that people are very friendly there, but because it is strange - YOU are strange as a foreigner. Probably a lot of necks will be stretched to get a glimpse of you...

Yes, it is a Kurdish area. I travelled through that area (South, South-east and East Turkey) for 4 weeks alone, I never had any problem. People are very friendly as long as you behave correct.

Do go to Hassankeyf if that is still possible - I heard they have started building the dam - it is a gorgeous place to see. Mado there has delicious tatli. I miss it!

Oh thanks for that, you've made me feel quite better now hehe =] I have spoke to his parents before but i thought maybe not everyone will accept me there. I have lived in Icmeler for last season but am back in England now because my boyfriend has gone home to his family and now i am going to visit them. I think Turkish people are just really friendly anywhere!! Aww ill think of u while i'm there hehe, quite freezing it seems hehe

I think you are overreacting and make generalisations. Yes, honor killing occurs in the east. But not only there! Yes, there are problems with PKK, but then don't go to Marmaris, Istanbul and Antalya as well, or to London, Madrid, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Morocco and several places more where also is terror threatening. I don't say you should neglect warnings, but don't pretend on every corner of the street gunned men are waiting.

I do not ignore, there are certainly places I won't go (Siirt and Sirnak for example). But I do not make it bigger as well.

Have you ever been to any place in the east? You are sounding as if you were the spokeswoman of PKK. That's what PKK is trying to do . To scare people and prevent them from going to the region and isolate the region from Turkey. Millions of people live in the region. The number of terorists is 3-5 thounsand. The majority of that number is on the other side of the border; in northern Iraq. And also almost 35 percent of them is non Kurdish. Pls be careful when talking about a region and people living there.

The areas' population is mainly Kurdish and they are more strictly blinded by some certain customs, traditions... So good luck. I cannot say it is the right place to go for a young tourist girl. If it were Gaziantep, Erzurum or Erzincan or some other eastern cities I would challenge you. But Batman... :S I bet even "Batman" has been at his homeland so far So be careful pls. But it will be a good experience for you to see the cultural gap.

Mardin is great! About Diyarbakir I don't know, the Lonely Planet said that was a dangerous city for a solo woman traveller, not because of terrorists but because of 'simple' (?) robbery and theft - it is one of the poorest cities in Turkey, so I did not go there.

Batman I found boring, nothing to do in the city itself, only a great pastane. Traditions I did not notice more than in other cities, enough 'modern' looking women on the street. But Erzurum? That is traditional, old fashioned! Very religious and no place to hang out and visit by yourself being a woman.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. My family in law lives in Hakkari, which is in the farthest south east corner, and I've never had problems of any kind there. Of course you should think about how you dress and don't eat eachother in public but other than that don't worry. I would say that when you're going there to see your boyfriends family (or even as a tourist) terrorism is a minor threat, I also doubt that if there are any around, that they would even care about your presence there. They go after specific targets, not innocents like yourself. As for regular people, some may look but that's only because they're curious.
As far as I remember Batman is a relatively small city, poorer than touristic areas of course.
Also I don't know if it is a problem in Batman but the bacterias in the water may vary from what you're used to. If you get any problems with your stomach you should definitely buy water.
Oh, and are you aware how people shower in that area?
There was so many things that I would like to have known the first time I went there, so if I can help you in any way don't hesitate to ask.

Three remarks: first - look at the bold sentence. It looks like you are accusing me and/or qdemir of doing something horrible. I do not date an Eastern guy, but if I was, it would be not a reason for me to defend a part of the country unless I liked that part. And it would never be a reason to you to be so agressive!

Second: you may be Turkish, but you never travelled as a tourist, that is quite something else than travelling being Turkish, think of language, absence of shared culture etc. If anyone of us has other experiences in that area or do not share your point of view, don't make them less worthwhile than yours.

Third: I do not like terrorists either. The fact that I say that I do not find Batman and area more dangerous than Istanbul, Marmaris or other places does not make me a terrorist lover!

Very good point Trudy!.....nur1 you make out that Batman is the worst place in the world - which it's not!. Have you taken notice of Iraq at the moment? different story I know but there are worst places in the world than Batman for crying out loud!

Oof abartma ya!

GinaG you will be quite safe in Batman I assure you. As long as you do what others say and cover up which as you say you will be doing anyway as it will be winter and do not show your boyfriend too much affection in public...holding hands should be fine but if you wish not to then by all means do not . Also your boyfriend lives in Batman so instead of listening to too many people that do not live there (though foreigners/vistors views are good because you will be one yourself).
Your boyfriend will have the best answers and I am sure he will keep you safe no matter what so there is definatly no need to worry

Oh and one more thing! Have a great and safe trip!
