Homework help again

How do I translate this?
Okulda ne var?
Is it: who is/are at school? or Is there a school?
I get confused because there is no 'kÃm' in the question.
(Maybe stupid but I am a real beginner....)

Another question. I need to complete sentences. One exercise has the example: Masada ne var? (What's on the table?) and the other one has as example: Masada kalem var mı? (Is there a pen on the table?).
Why in the first example they do not use 'mi' (or variations) when asking while they do use it in the second example?

coz in the scond question it s asking if there is a pen on table. but in first question i ts asking what is on the table, has no idea what is on.

So if the sentence is specific with a noun (like here with a pen) I need to use 'var mı' and if not just 'var' is enough? That explains! Thanks, Janissary.

"mi" particle usually is used when there is no question word. you have "ne" (what) in the sentence "Masada ne var?".

Yes, exactly. You can't have both a question word (eg. ne) and "mi" in a sentence. The "mi" is added so that you know it is a question.

Next time I will do Canli. I just thought homework translations / questions being a nice change for all that 'sevgilim' stuff....
