I just had another lesson of Turkish. I learned about possisive suffixes like 'evim' and 'annem'. Also that kitapları has three meanings: his/her books (kitaplar + ı ), their book (kitap + ları ) and their books (kitap + ları, not twice lar because that's too much).

I forgot to ask my teacher so I do it here. Is this the same with the suffix -leri?

I mean, e.g. evleri, does that mean also: his/her houses (evler + i), their house (ev + leri) and their houses (ev + leri, not twice ler)?

I hope I made my question clear enough. Who can help me?

benim annem=my mother
senin evin=uor house
onun defteri=his/her notebook
bizim kitapimiz= our book
sizin gulumseniz= your smile
onlarin cocuklari= their kid/kids

benim mumlarim= my candles
senin sarkilarin= your songs
onun cantalari= his/her bags
bizim hatiralarimiz= our memories
sizin sorulariniz= your questions
onlarin odevleri= their homework/s

you just have to follow the mwaning, the vowel harmony and...the grammer rules

good luck!

Hi Julia, this is not my question. I know those rules though to practice is still difficult. I just mean that special thing with ları does that exists with leri as well?

And isn't it bizim kitabımız? The p become b when the suffix starts with a vowel isn't it?

AS FAR AS I'M AWARE THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LERI AND LARI IS THE WHETHER HARD OR SOFT VOWELS ARE THE LAST LETTER.THEREFORE THE SAME RULE SHOULD APPLY..I HOPE A DEFINITIVE ANSWER COMES ALONG SOON

sorry, my mistake.....it is "kitabimiz"
regarding -lar/ler, the rule of the plural applies and the vowel harmony:
ev-evler; onlarin evleri
kiz-kizlar/ onlarin kizlari

Yes Trudy, you are exactly right. To be explicit you can use onun(his) or onların(their)

onun evleri - his houses
onların evi - their house
onların evleri - their houses

Thanks Harikayim, this is what I want to find out. Now I know I understood the explanation of my teacher correct.
