I have just seen a news in the webpage of a Turkish newspaper:

An American girl came to Turkey 3 days ago to meet his Turkish boyfriend that she met on the internet. While she left her hotel in Taksim in Istanbul to see around, she was kidnapped by 2 guys and raped by 10 guys.

Please be careful, if you travel there alone!

But Istanbul is supposed to be relatively safe! Poor girl...

Actually I have been thinking about buying a pepper spray or something when I'm with myself. It's sad that women can't walk around with themselves nowadays.

I feel for that girl, it must be awful, but this is something that could happen anywhere around the world. No need to blow this up out of proportion.

Ladies,
Please be aware that this could happen ANYWHERE. Protect yourself by being aware of your surroundings (very hard to do in a strange place). If you are traveling alone, let someone know your itinerary. I travel alot for work and I always tell them at the front desk...I am going to XXX I will be back at XXX and I try to keep in touch with your family at least daily.

that is right BUT In other places the rapers are caught and punished right away. Whereas, in Turkey they are caught late and released easily. The punishments in Turkey are not dissuasive. For example, the police has announced that one of those 10 rapers had been caught before because of robbery and released. So, they were let free and then raped that American girl Is this law and justice?

If you do not want to be hurt in Turkey, please be cautious!

May I say something different?

Turkish media is very famous about telling lies on news. I am not a big fan of that newspaper, maybe the news is true but if you noticed: there is no resource. Turkish media, especially some newspapers are not accredited. They have news without a little reality. You should look at resource for a good new, for example: AA(Anadolu Ajans- Anadolu Agency) is a reliable resource. And if you noticed, there is not much info about the girl or the other people (bad guys?).

Well, I am not sure about this information. Who knows... maybe it is totally lie..

this information is not true! it must be western journalists who made up the stories. esp bbc and cnn who rule behind all the worlds newspapers and info sources. western liars! they manipulate with such stories so that the whole world thinks bad on such countries, they destroy the holy reputation of holy nations. they wanted to spoil the kurban bayram atmosphere. its again a slap for arab and arab-related countries. these nations have great history, they had great empires which westerners didnt have (according to some smart "selfmade historians").

i dont believe this happent, its a huge lie! we can be proud of that our women are always respected and under a great protection (sometimes under burka), they protected in a way that such incidents do not take a place because women are kept home, safe and happy. there at home they enjoy the true freedom.
it happens only to american or european chicks who are not protected by coverings. who do not hide their weekness. no wonder shes raped!

Aman tanrım, şunu inanmiyorum...
Even though Turkey is a country with great history doesn't mean there doesn't exist bad people there, because obviously there do. Or are you denying that rape and other crimes occur at all?
I'd like you to explain why you think that women should stay in their home with a burka in order not to get raped, because I have never heard that from a fellow woman before.
Look, in history women wore veals to cover themselves from the heat and dirt, as they rarely bathed (like men also did), but since then it has changed into what we see it as today "protecting their beauty" and so on.
When a woman doesn't wear a burka doesn't mean she's inviting men to rape her, it means that she wants to be treated the same way as men and that she is not a weak doll. When a man sees a woman not wearing a veil and he feels he has the right to rape her, he has a serious psychologic problem and he is a danger to society.
It is that type of men that are wrong, not women who simply wants to be respected and treated equally, because that's what they (we) do.

The girl in question was simply visiting her boyfriend and went outside for a minute, for gods sake. She never did anything wrong, certaintly didn't intend to get gang raped that's for sure.
I don't understand how you can deny it and say that it was her fault. Also, Turkey is a secular country (well, partly). What about women studying at universities? Is that a giant gang rape waiting to happen or what? Should they bend down and accept a 100 year old fate?
I am utterly shocked.

If you're joking don't mind this post.

My other half said to me that Istanbul can be a dangerous place , i said so can other places in the world but he was adament Istanbul could be bad, he insisted on carrying any bags i had (my handbag doesnt look femanine) because he said if they were to be snatched or we were held up for them he would rather face the confrontation than to have me face them.
Apart from the uneasiness i felt (as per my previous post) i wasnt scared but i noticed the amount of police around as well as the security people on the stations etc were second to non. wish our uk police forces had the same amount of staff !!

You should be careful where-ever you go and whatever sex you are - it is just about being sensible and minimising dangers where possible.
