As an old member I feel gloomy when I remember what this site used to be like in the past...It was a nice shelter to learn turkish and make friends, It still is a good one with many helpful members but the old members like me will understand what I meant by saying that "We have lost something" as a community...
In spite of this feeling, I wont forget all the things I learnt and shared here!

Even though I haven't been here for a long time I understand what you mean. It was really nice when there was a defined group of regular users, but lately I feel that some of them are running away. It's saddening, really. The site has not changed when it comes to learning ressources, only social-wise. I can only wonder why

Are you trying to help solve a problem or are u trying to show how to complicate matters?

As long as it is so easy for people to take new nicknames, we cannot expect them to assume the responsibility of the things they write.

I suggest that a more strict validation process is implemented which can ban not only certain nicks but also
the ip's they are associated with. This would make life a little bit more difficult for evil doers.

I am not aware of this vineyards. I don't think the level of rudeness has gone up... or I'm oblivious to it . I wish we could have a better way to ensure that deleted users can't come back, but I don't see what better could be done about it. The only thing is marking spammers and reporting misbehavior and we'll be deleting such users more efficiently or dealing with the problems they cause.

I think the difference here now is the sensitivity levelamongst the users. Before, all topics could be discussed with an open mind, an no attempt to be self-rightous or hurtful. I think we are seeing alot of both of these qualities in people the last few months in the posts they create and their responses to others.
I do think that the better monitoring of the chat room is a great idea and can only bring the site back to where we all want it to be. Inşallah...

Keith you are spot on!! Where as once I would have a say, give my opinion, I now think that I am going to offend someone because I have an opinion, which not everyone agrees with and vice versa.

And because I am not Turkish I should not comment or have an opinion on Turkish subjects. I am also wary about starting up a new topic for fear of repercussions. So yes, it is a sensitivity issue.

Libralady I am not a cop. I have no authority over anyone of you. I just explain my idea. Why do you feel restricted?

Anyone having an idea is free to post his/her idea here. Anyone is free to criticize it. Some of us call some others self-rightous. Well this is not very polite. I would prefer that you write your own version of the truth and we might criticize your arguments rather than your personalities.

A number of times I have declared the basis of my opinions. I attempted to systematize my thoughts. What I got in return was criticism directed to my personality or culture. Please, answer opinions with opinions, I suspect some members here don't know how to discuss. Because they easily abondon the subject and begin attacking the personality of the other party.

I am not talking about you!!

I actually don't understand your point KeithL. I don't think that discussing sensitive issues was without turmoil before. Do you remember pre-Erdinc times and then Erdinc times? In pre-Erdinc times any kind of cultural discussion ended with swearing and offended people, in Erdinc times discussions were strictly controlled, and what is so wrong now? I don't see anything really... I was thinking that it got better, people seem know better what's ok and what's not - which doesn't mean that somebody won't get offended here and there. I wonder if there are other people who feel the same way about this.

I am somehow tempted to think that the later slow-down in the forums is rather due to lack of new energetic members. The older members who are very valuable, they are naturally comfortable in their own corners here and don't feel the need of sparking discussions. I think the web site for older members who feel like it lost something faces problems of a long term relationship that is about to get over the first stages of infatuation .

Hi everyone,
I think the problem is not only some users' intellectual level, and their misbehaviour but also the lack of interesting topics. I used to chat here days and nights with Capo,Kai, kardeslerim and many others...and I used to have hard discussions with catwoman but not anymore... Because I was spending time in forums until people enters into chat room then I was chatting with them. But I cant find any interesting topic anymore to spend my time so I leave after 15 minutes..
As u see I noticed this topic 10 days after the last message :-S

Like some others, you say there are no interesting topics anymore. Other people miss 'the old days'. To me, as a relative newbee (september 2006) that remains a mystery. What do you miss? What are interesting topics for you? I noticed that on many touristic questions hardly answers are given, politics and religion are strictly forbidden and the ones that are allowed do not seldom end in calling other people names. Can you clear things up please?

In fact Catwoman, I miss beating your modern looking-old fashioned ideas all the time

"What are interesting topics for you? I noticed that on many touristic questions hardly answers are given, politics and religion are strictly forbidden..."
what is interesting for me, what is beneficial for humanity.. this is a website which is full of foreign people who wants to learn about real Turkey. Many treacheries are being doen in Turkey these days (for instance; some cruel people are trying to show Turkish people as if they are enemies of Christians etc...) If there will be such topics which will help people to notice and realize the smiling face of Turkey, and many other actual topics which should not be locked unless a personal rudeness happens then I personally keep writing..(by the way, I will be in China for ten days, if someone will start such a topic and if I will not be able to reply, please forgive me)
I couldnt find anything worth to write among the last 50 discussion messages....

Start a topic yourself! Ask other people their opinion. You (and many other 'old' members) know what was going on in the times you are longing for. With only saying 'there is no interesting topic to reply' nothing will change.

BTW - Enjoy your trip (business? holiday?) in China.

I am new to the site and I enjoy it as it is. I'd just like to add my 2 cents or 2.7 new lira...

I believe that the loss you are experiencing is related to the learning and discoveries you all shared at the same time as a group. Fresh discoveries and particularly pleasant ones with like-minded people are intense experiences. When the freshness fades and the "group experience" loses momemtum the new discoveries become "individual" experiences. And in time group members mourn their loss and talk about "the good old days". We learn and discover things everyday, the hard part is to find a group of people with which to share the same experiences and to relive those magical moments.

I respect your perspective. However, several members have left this site for a variety of personal reasons. I think we all miss them...some more than others. I think there was a point about 1 to 2 months ago when a great lack of respect and downright immature behavior aimed at offending others reached an all time max. It was awful. While I for one miss the good moments and have fond memories, I am eager to see what the newer members bring to the site . I also love this site and will continue to participate...perhaps even more after my studies end. All things change and this site is no different. Hopefully, it has become a place where respect reins and our love for Turkey shines even brighter.

It's really amazing to see different opinions on this topic - how everybody contributes such interesting and thoughtful ideas. This is exactly what I enjoy so much about our conversations.

If you have any (realistic) ideas about improvements that could be done, please share.
