My grammar say "diye" is a conjunction, but in usage, I see it used like a verb.

"diyecak", "Ne diyorsonuz". Is it related to "demek".

Ne diyorsonuz.

"Ne diyorsunuz?"

It is related to "demek". Only "demek" and "yemek" verbs' vowels change in present tense.

de(mek) + (i)yor = diyor

ye(mek) + (i)yor = yiyor

(demek=to say, yemek=to eat)

I remember this form:

Annesi gelmeyecek diye gitti.
Because his mother wouldn't come, he went.

It says the reason before the word "diye"

Another form:
Ne yapıyorsun diye kızdı.
He became angry by saying "What are you doing".

It says what he said, and maybe the relation of getting angry.

* Diye is a conjunction used for direct speech and quotations.

When expressing direct speech you don't have to use it when using the verb 'demek', but you do with any other verb. I hope the examples below make it clearer.

Annesi, hemen buraya gel dedi
His mother said: 'Come here immediately.'

ama

Annesi, hemen buraya gel diye çağırdı
His mother shouted: 'Come here immediately!'

Here we use the verb 'çağırmak', so you have to put diye before it to express the direct speech. Same with verbs like söylemek, düşÃ¼nmek, konuşmak, sormak...

More examples:

Bursa nerede diye sordu (<=> Bursa nerede dedi)
Acıktım diye söyledi (<=> Acıktım dedi)
Eve gitmem lazım diye düşÃ¼ndü (<=> Eve gitmem lazım dedi)

'Quotation' example:
Dur diye bir levhanın önünde durmak gerek - You have to stop in front of a stop sign.
Bahar diye bir kız aradı - A girl called Bahar phoned.

* Diye + use of the optative tense is also used to give a meaning of 'so that/in order that'

Ex: Bunu iyi bilesin diye tekrarlayacağım - I will repeat this so that you will know it well.

Hope this helps.

I think, this example doesn't make sense. I mean construction of the sentence is wrong, and for that reason, it is not related to this topic.

This can be ok:
"Dur yazılı bir levhanın önünde durmak gerek"

Oh God.. :-S It's an example I took from my course. It's not the first time people said that some things I took from there are wrong
Maybe I should just use it to light the barbecue

yes, true form of it is ; Dur levhasının önünde durmak gerek.

Yours is not the true form of the former suggestion, but is just identical to "You have to stop in front of the sign Stop."

A suggestion related to the topic would be "...diye yazılı...".

Dur diye yazılı bir levhanın önünde durmak gerek.
You have to stop in front of a stop sign.

...Köşeyi dön, sonra Dur diye yazılı bir levha göreceksin....
...Turn the corner, then you will see a stop sign....(lit. a sign on which is written Stop)
