Greenpeace builds Noah's Ark on Mt. Ararat

12 Environmental activists are building a replica of Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat - where the biblical vessel is said to have landed after the great flood - in an appeal for action on global warming, Greenpeace said Wednesday. Turkish and German volunteer carpenters are making the wooden ship on the mountain in eastern Turkey, bordering Iran. The ark will be revealed in a ceremony on May 31, a day after Greenpeace activists climb the mountain and call on world leaders to take action to tackle climate change, Greenpeace said."Climate change is real, it's happening now and unless world leaders take urgent, decisive and far-reaching action, the next decades will see human misery on a scale not experienced in modern times," said Greenpeace activist Hilal Atici. "Those leaders have a mandate from the people ... to massively cut greenhouse gas emissions and to do it now."Many countries are struggling to address global and national standards for carbon emissions.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN CULTURE, HERE IS SOMETHING VERY CULTURAL

"He was one of those rare people that would put his life on the line for an issue like French nuclear testing," said Ms Palese, who remains an active member of Greenpeace.

The above sentence is by a Greenpeace activist, about their founder Mr.David McTaggart, shortly after McTaggart's untimely death.

David McTaggart was a very rich Canadian of British roots.

- He lost an eye, in a brawl with French commandos.
- He is the founder of Greenpeace.
- Greenpeace is well known for its efforts to hinder and stop French nuclear activities around the world.
- French Navy eventually had to openly torpedo and sink the Greenpeace flagship (RAINBOW WARRIOR) in high seas.
- McTaggart died (!) shortly afterwards, in Italy, in a very suspicious car accident.

NOBODY THINKS THE BRITISH SECRET SERVICE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH McTAGGART's DEATH.

Very good point, I think it's enough of preaching here and "culturalizing" everybody.

I already answered that. And I was merely stating that people rarely reply to culture related topics (which is a simple fact, it's got nothing to do with preaching ot "culturalizing", hell, people can be interested in whatever they'd like), apparently unless it's for bashing people.

Azade,
If you think GREENPEACE is a cultural topic, I think you should know that GREENPEACE is classified under '' covert operations''.

I know what Green peace is, but the article is not about that per say, it's about a model of "Noah's ark" which is something that people can go see.

I have to ask what you consider "culture"? I mean there is a hip-hop culture, fashion culture, new age culture etc. etc. Culture is such a broad definition and who and what is culture is debateable.

When 'Tango' music first came out, the affluent Argentines turned their noses up at it. After it went and became famous in Europe, it was accepted. Now it is showcased at argentine cultural shows and is the national dance. So, I think you might find that "people" on this site are indeed interested in culture. Just maybe not the same stuff you are interested in.

I dont see it as cultural either - just a statement from Greenpeace about climate change but I think there are more effective ways to demonstrate, like bricking up the doors of the White House with all the US government inside lol_fast: !! Nice project for the Turkish carpenters tho' !! :

Cultur, in its broadest sense, is the ability to be aware. If your awareness allows you to believe innocent carpenters are happily building an ark on Mt. Ararat......so be it !

Look I really don't think it's funny that my every word has to be analyzed into pieces so it can be used against me. There are so many definitions of culture and it's a very broad word today, so I still stand by what I said in the first place. Just take a look at past topics, those who relate to culture or anything similar are often more or less overlooked. And it wasn't a negative statement that I made obviously, it was simply an explanation as to why the author of the thread was thankful that someone replied.

Just take a look at this thread, even. People are more busy nagging than actually caring about what it was about in the first place. Does nobody have anything to say about the original topic?

Is says they are volunteer carpenters, and what's wrong with wanting more focus on climate changes?

I am sure Greenpeace will be so appreciative that you think their attempts to gain awareness and action to prevent global distruction are "nice"! And, pray tell, why are you not a "big fan"?

I'm not a "big fan" of them because of their sometimes blunt methods, but I'm not an expert on the subject whatsoever - however I also think it's irrellevant which organization instituted that because the subject of global warming etc. is an important matter in our time.

I think it is an interesting article and don't understand why people get off bashing another here. As I understand it, this is supposed to be a site to learn, and Turkish issues are of primary importance.

Please stop with the personal attacks.

I have noticed Azade the target of more than one of them. Please stop these personal attacks and let us incorporate some of that beautiful and wonderful Turkish grace and hospitality I'm sure we all love into our posts.

Well I find it ridiculous for others to bash "people" on this site for taking up for broad-overgeneralizations by other "people" on this site!

I am part of that "people" group that has been classified as not interested in "culture". I have seen extremely long and on-going forums for poetry, music, literature, political, cultural and yes even religious ones go on for days...So I cannot understand why those LONG discussions aren't considered when making stereotypical statements that aren't even true.

Nobody is bashing or picking apart a single person here. Just that one cannot generalize about a mass group and expect that everyone is going to agree with that...

That is the beauty and downfall of this site. We are all individuals and each one has an opinion and a view point. As long as there is general respect, which is debateable as well, people should expect their everyword to be analyzed and debated!
