An Old but Popular Post

This subject has been brought up so many times but I was wondering how many of TC users have had successful relationships with a Turkish man or woman?
There is so much controversy so I wanted to try and pull together all the positive stories to redress the balance a little!
I was cautious when I met my partner whilst spending time with friends on holiday. I had heard the resort stories and was not interested in anything other than relaxing with friends and exploring the coast a little.
A resort worker started to approach me, just talking about every day things..his resort life, his family, his friends, likes and dislikes and we fell easily into conversation. I had no expectations and just enjoyed the company and making new friends. It wasn't until the end of our holiday that I felt that connection with him. We exchanged numbers but I never expected any developments once I left the country. I thought of him often but was just happy to have known him.
But once I returned home, and he went home to his family, we remained close.
Long story short, we have never been happier or more content with our lives. Before his National Service we spent a long time in eachother's company. We have worked through any problems and fears and discuss everything openly and as equals. He has shown me a completely new culture and way of life...really broadened my horizons and increased my love of Turkey through his passion for his country. I intend to start a life over there as soon as he is discharged from the army.
I had the same concerns and fears about the "holiday romance" but in my case it had the best possible ending.
I just wanted to share this and was wondering if anyone else had similar stories to share?

You are right. This topic has been written on and discussed to many times! Always with the same results...a huge debate about over-generalızation and the promotion of stereotypes!

I agree with you. So much generalising and debating and the fact is there is no answer to the arguement. It just goes on and on. Not really productive!!!!
However, I do get tired of the negativity & generalisation that floats about. It would be nice to hear of a few of the happier threads to dispel a little of the "holiday romance" ideas. Maybe dilute some of the generalisations a little? For those who are in such relationships, I think it's only healthy to say "yes this and this can happen" "but it doesn't always have to be the case".

I'm a happy example
But I'd never recommend anyone to engage in this kind of relationship, because even if you're both genuine about it, the first years are just an endless struggle. For us it wasn't so much because of cultural differences, we coped with that pretty quickly, it's problems that our respective countries throw at us constantly. I'm danish but we have to live in either Sweden or Germany for the years to come, because they don't allow us to live in my home country but I need an education and there's no way we, as students, could support ourselves in Turkey.
So my advice to everyone would be..don't even think about entering this kind of relationship. Too many problems.
Personally I'm really happy with the way things turned out but generally speaking the success rate is so low, so.

I am only a humble student that uses the translation requests as a means of practice, but wonder about the ethics of facilitating these relationships. Just now somebody asked in English how say, "I want to share my life with you" and then a few lines later. "what is you last name".
But you look where the requestor comes from and think about what this says about the men that they live..
But here in this virtual "community" we know that "persons" seeking these relationship with Turks with who they can't "speak" directly, are the "fuel" that drive (insallah) TURKISH ClASS along.
Azade has shared his life story with us and i sincerely hope that it continues well. We that inhabit the Tranlation Forum see that many other outcomes are possible as we get see it unfold.

I agree. I think the translators on TC must see an awful lot of relationships unfolding and it must raise questions for you. Some great relationships, some not so good. But I suppose at the end of the day it is not so much the CONTENT of the request that is important...it is the encouragement it gives to learn. It is merely a learning tool for others.
I would like to think you translate a lot of positive messages aswell...men and women wishing to convey good news and happiness. People expressing their love is never a bad thing (but you must have to translate Seni Seviyorum SO many times!).
My partner and I communicate very well in English, but I use the translation service to convey certain messages I need him to understand, and to show an interest in his language! His family speak very very little english indeed so it is so important I try and learn so I'm not relying on my partner all the time. Once a translation has been made, I will take it to compare with my own and learn from it.

No the laws are so strict that he can't live in Denmark until I'm 28. It's a discriminating law but the government doesn't care even the slightest.
The reason we're going to stay in Sweden or Germany is that I can still study in Denmark that way.
In the long run we want to live in Turkey, partly because I'm just fed up with all the crap the danish immigration"service" throws at us. I don't really feel danish anymore, whatever that means.
It's pretty pathetic that Sweden allows to live there when I'm not even a swedish citizen, but my own country doesn't.
-
Yeah some of the things posted in the translation forum are really private, others so basic that anyone requesting translations should have learnt it already. But whatever floats their boat, it's still good practice for the translators.
I'm so glad to be learning turkish, although I haven't had much time lately. The language I speak with my husband is a mix of turkish and english, hopefully in time we won't need english anymore.

Sorry for picking a sentence from your post, but I don't understand what you mean here. Why can't we possibly choose who we fall for? Are you saying that we have no control over our feelings even when we feel attracted to the wrong people? That sounds like a very unexamined attitude.
You probably think that we fall in love "out of nowhere", but I disagree with that. It's always out of somewhere, except that people romanticize and make the feeling of being in love so sacred that there's no question of "where is it coming from" or "why do I like this clearly wrong person?". Women are often victims of this attitude because they take unequal responsibility for the wrong relationships and like little children, just can't let them go.

It applies to everyone. The government states that it's to reduce the amount of arranged marriages, but really they just want to keep all foreigners out of the country. The EU has critizised the law countless times because it's discriminating but the government doesn't care whatsoever.

Discriminating?...no realistic! The fact is that many of you naive silly girls are bewitched by a few romantic words on holiday uttered by serial-sex tourist workers and import unskilled Turkish men into other countries who leave you within a year and are free to enjoy their new residency
Now shout at me that I generalize! Yes! Tell me its not just Turkish men! Then tell me why its only Turkish tourist workers who do this?

Then that explains your pessimism and generalization Ghost. I never had a holiday romance and always try to discourage people from that because ..well DUH. You couldn't have cared to read my opening post before making such a harsh (false) accusation?
And the law I'm referring to has nothing to do with turks (or other nationalities) wanting to use a fake marriage as an excuse to move to european countries. The purpose of that law (which only Denmark has by the way) is to help (mainly) muslim women who are forced into marrying someone they don't know.

What a breeze of fresh air... Takes a ghost to speak with balls. I am amazed at the delusion, naiveness and complete lack of common sense in people from western democratic countries. It seems that the more obvious something is, the easier they deny it (under the ridiculous cover of multiculturalism and fear of "offending" insecure, wounded egos). They earned themselves what they are facing now - islamization that hijacked and is destroying their once tolerant, prosperous countries.

Well...I can only judge by what I see . The most popular holiday destination in the UK is Spain and Spanish Islands. Spaniards behave very differently to the tourists and its very rare for a relationship to develop between a tourist girl and a tourist worker. Lets compare that with Turkey...
Sorry dear but you must know that its a joke in the UK. If anyone says they are going to Turkey for their holidays there are lots of nudges and winks...rightly so, if the translations on this website are anything to go by!

so much translation request stands for it as a strong confirmation (including those in this site, who testify so with their experiences)! have you noticed the majority of them as well as learners are female? why do you think they suddenly want learning turkish? they have turkish lovers, boyfriends, husbands. imagine there are ten times more, because not all the translation requests come to TC. it is smth, isnt it?

It's normal that we see this kind of people here in our translation forums becuase this is a turkish language forum, and given that the english of most of the turkish men is not very good they come here with their texts.
I'd say men are men everywhere, I agree that it's not so widespread in the western europe but it's not because men are very different there, but it's rather because they do not need to use the woman as a step to go to another country to have a better life, and also they have too many available women in their countries to have sex with if it's just about sex. And if I went to Greece or Italy to pass my holiday, I'd probably meet men there who chase me for a small holiday adventure, they would make me fall in love with them, they would break my heart but they wouldn't want to marry me because they wouldn't want to leave their country and you'd never hear about my sad love story because they would know english.
I'm sure if Colombia, Brazil, Algerie, Lubnan, Senegale were favourite holiday destinations like Turkey in Europe, we'd hear such stories. You think men there are different than the men in Turkey. They wouldn't use a woman for her passport?!Then, if again you say that there wouldn't be as many stories as with the Turkish men, then I say you only one thing "Turkish men are too cute"

Hey I do not defend them, but I just want to make the situation clear, make a good judgement,I try to uncover the reasons of why there are a lot of such stories with the turkish/kurdish resort workers rather than just labelling them as animals like catwoman did. Now it's better,
- bad economic situations
- worries about getting passport
- having sex in a country where they cannot find a lot of available women
- being hot and exotic (knowing how to steal the hearts of the europeans )
- the hotel managers letting them do this

All these things you just listed (though very superficially) only show their low moral standards and that it's completely righteous to criticize and condemn their behavior. You see yourself how tragic the situation is, you should be ashamed of this and do something about it. Difficult economic situation is NOT an excuse for being assholes, liers, manipulators, cheaters... etc. These guys arrange meetings with 5 different women in a day to hope to get some of them to have sex with them or to get money out of them. They have multiple girlfriends at the same time each summer, they make commitments they never intend to keep. Some of them are even married. In a country where women have no equal rights and where you can get hard core pornography with your saturday news (along with softer porn every day), this is really not surprising.

As an asian, may I add my two cents here.
1. yes, I feel(personal observation and experience, no offence) Turkish men (esp. those in tourist industry) are showing zealous interests in women tourists. I've been to some other countries(European, American, Afriacn & Asian)where I did not feel the same way.
2. yes, I also see forums or chatting in TC on and off revealing many heartbreaking stories of Turkish men dumping western lovers or wives.
3. to be fair there are also a few happy-ending(I should say up-till-now) stories going on. But I really concern about those relationships involving western teenagers. To me, these Turkish men are acting out of ethics IF they are having hidden agenda for the romance. For those who are adults, I think they have all rights to develop any kind of relationships and bear the whatsoever outcome.

Nobody is denying the fact there are people who use eachother all over the world, but NO OTHER COUNTRY'S RESORTS have the scale of this problem as much as Turkey and silly girls will continue to fall for their "charms" forever!
Instead of defending these scum, why does it not concern you that this is the Turkey that 90% of tourists will judge ALL TURKISH PEOPLE by! The majority of Turkish are NOT like these serial-sex romeos, and its sad that these workers are their ambassadors.

I absolutely hate the current drink/casual sex culture affecting young women and its a fact that sexually transmitted diseases have increased enormously in the UK in the past 5 years. HOWEVER, the point is Libralady, that these girls are exploiting nobody except themselves. Its their choice.
The Turkish tourist workers are exploiting women and using emotional blackmail for material gain. You simply cannot compare the two! These men spend years sleeping with tourists, exploiting all they can. The "lucky" ones find a naive girl or woman who may provide them with money and/or marry them. Then...the majority end up marrying "a nice Turkish virgin" and probably put her health at risk from his years of sexual disease.

There was not a generalization of western women. There are millions of western women coming to pass their holidays in Turkey and do not experience anything like this. The morals of these men for sure are very disgusting, if they listened to what the book of İslam said, they would not do so many immoral things (I said this because you noted that they are muslims).
But I usually feel that while you wrongly blame us defending these men, you have a tendancy to protect the women. Most of these women do not have morals either (there must be exceptions), but I do not judge them, it's their lives, they have fun, but they are not victims at all.
Anyway, during summer the natives of these resort cities are not happy to see these people (both men and women) either. I'm happy that I live far away from these places.
As been said, I also want that some measures be taken by the responsables, and these workers work in a more disciplined way.

Good point . Well...I guess I didn't want to add a THIRD factor into the argument! The MALE drink/casual sex culture has been around a lot longer! The more recent trend for this amongst females means they are vulnerable to sexual assult and, because of the global mysogynistic attitudes, open to more ridicule.
The reason I was only commenting on the females was because it was used as part of the "defence" against those poor, hard done by, innocent Turkish tourist workers

Quoting Ghost: Good point . Well...I guess I didn't want to add a THIRD factor into the argument! The MALE drink/casual sex culture has been around a lot longer! The more recent trend for this amongst females means they are vulnerable to sexual assult and, because of the global mysogynistic attitudes, open to more ridicule.
The reason I was only commenting on the females was because it was used as part of the "defence" against those poor, hard done by, innocent Turkish tourist workers |
For one, I am glad that women are drinking and having sex freely, with whomever they want. At least in the western democratic countries, rape is punished and women stand up a little bit for their rights (instead of defending their oppressors). First of all, it brought public debate to these issues (though as we see HERE, it usually refers to women!, but at least some also shed a light on men too). Secondly, some men realized that this attitude is wrong because they finally experienced what it's like to be cheated on or when the woman spends most of the time for her own pleasure. Only positives! As you said, in all that women are not manipulators and liers.

Well I agree in principle. I would have agreed FULLY with you until a few years ago Catwoman. Until you have SEEN FOR YOURSELF the extent of binge drinking in the UK and the culture it has created, you won't know what I'm talking about. Its unique to the UK as far as I can tell. These are not assertive, confident women doing what the hell they like. These are binge-drinking drunks who play the silly vulnerable girl role to the dominant males in this u-turn in female liberation.
Going out, drinking, making sexual choices for yourself for your own pleasure - IS GREAT. This is another thing entirely. I am pretty sure other UK classmates would agree with me.

<< this sucks! what the hell henry has to do with resorts?
and all the rest? sucks sucks sucks! 1000 times!>>
I'm sorry my post was not clear enough. I believe the subject of this discussion, if one looks at the larger view is one of the exploitation of emotional vulnerability.
My point is that it happens and has taken place in all classes, all cultures and throughout all time. It is about the use of that vulnerability for personal gain with little regard for well being of the object of exploitation
<< hey, you forgot about don juan! how about superman, batman, spiderman, ouch...james bond - her majesty servant! they are all kinda sexual maniacs!you better dont post to make such a shame of yourself! >>
I don't remember reading such stories regarding Superman, Batman or any of the others you mentioned....although Don Juan was known to be a rather rude.....but that would take quite a while to go over here and now.

How come is everybody to quick point out the "horrible behavior of western women", but defend so fiercely the turkish male scumbags? Are you all worshipers of the female virginity and "men are men" backwardness? |

I agree with MLTM - the women are just as responsbible as the men and whilst there is a supply there will be a demand! And whilst the supply is increasing so will the demand - simple economics!

Mltm is known for her patriarchal, parochial, nationalistic ideas, so I'm not surprised to hear this biased, one-sided criticism from her. In fact I'm not surprised that you agree with her either, based on the history of your posts. You're just another example of a westerner that takes for granted the freedom she has, while being brainwashed with the mixture of outdated christian (and increasingly muslim), patriarchal and mysogynistic sentiments to the past and to the unknown, but exotic-sounding and looking east. Your opinions, while probably well intended, just bang the same old, backward mantra of women being guilty when they are raped, the "supply" being the cause of "demand", the offender being just a poor, little victim of HIS genes and background - absolutely incapable of making his own decisions and god-forbid having to take responsibility for them. It's exactly women like you and mltm who allow the continuation of the deplorable gender inequalities.

While I am personally disgusted by the behaviour of some men and women in these resorts, I think in most of the cases both parts are very much aware of what they are doing. They are playing it like a game - so let them do it and take the consequences.
But at the same time I have seen a few examples of both men and women who were really hurt when the summer romance ended, because they were looking for something more than the other part was.

Yes people get conned all over the world Libralady. Is it wrong to try and open people's eyes so that they are NOT the next victim? Or do we just sigh with that self-satisfied smile of the "it's never going to happen to me" brigade?
Offfffffffffffff!
Quoting Ghost: I dont think the problem has anything to do with the men or women who chose to have sex with eachother on their holiday! That's their business.
The situation I have a problem with is those tourist workers who relentlessly persue european girls (and older women) with false claims of love and con them out of money (and sometimes their homes).
The pattern is usually the same....meet girl on holiday declare undying love within a few days...when they return bombard them with sms and emails....after a few weeks start telling them how unhappy they are....a few subtle requests start to creep in ("my cell phone was stolen".."I wish we could talk on msn but I need a laptop")....then soon the tourist season ends and they are talking about how they want to kill themselves because they are in debt...then how they wish they could be with you....
They forget to tell you that they have been doing the same with dozens of girls they met during the season.
Throughout this process the relentless sms and emails continue along the lines of "baby I need you/love you/I want to marry you/would die without you" and are nicely embellished by descriptions of the sexual acts they are going to perform on you.....
I have been a member of this site long enough to know the situation very well just by the translations!
The holiday season is upon us AGAIN now so the translations will soon begin at the first stage, and continue to the marriage part by the winter.
Of course, ALL of you will think your situation is "different" and its genuine love ....good luck!

I am a %100 sure that Libralady's words never had the underlying meaning that the woman is guilty when she gets raped.
There is a difference in being pushed into sexual actions and not being able to defend yourself, and having a (sexual) relationship on holiday and think of the birds and the bees and then get asked for money.
My opinion here might sound a little simple and superficial, which is because its getting late and also because these endless discussions have left me in between two opinions, but even after all the arguments, I cant help but think 'You should have seen it coming.' How can you trust a man (or a woman for that matter), when you've spend only 2 weeks with him, how can a love be genuine and be more than just a (temporary) infatuation? Im tired of writing 'ofcourse this is just a generalization and there are exceptions', I am aware of that, but in discussions like this you cannot avoid generalizations.
I can say I have lived nearly all my life in one of the most free countries in the world, and I know a many girl who wouldn't mind to take off her clothes on a first date. I don't see the raping-part in here, I don't see the part where she gets exploited by a man here. I don't see why the opinion of women being free in their sexual behavior, leads to the thought that a woman is guilty when she is raped.
Just wanted to point out that I don't agree with that point of yours Catwoman, Libralady's ideas are based upon what she knows about British women/girls, not upon her idea that a woman is guilty when she gets raped. Because being raped has nothing to do with demand and supply. It only lies in demand.

Of course libralady didn't mean that rape is a woman's fault. I wanted to point out that this used to be the accepted belief, which goes along the same line of thought with its lighter version - which says that any undesirable, promiscuous sexual behavior is women's fault (degradingly stated that women are the "supply"). Not only men's morality, their promiscuity and sexual exploitations are completely ignored, but they are even justified!

Since I have nothing to do, I can try to write catwoman a few lines, but I think she is far more experienced in classifying people that do not think the way she thinks.
Most of my ideas and views in life are quite moderate and objective. When someone makes a generalization that "this kind of things only happen in Turkey, only Turkish resort workers are like this and that and that." It seems to me so superficial to think like that, then it means that it's in the genes of Turkish men and like saying as long as the world turns they will stay like that. Why would I accept this? If for you being nationalistic is opposing to that, it's ok for me. I tried to explain the underlying reasons for that immoralities, without knowing the reasons, how would you give a solution, your kind of ideas can only create hatred towards a group of people. Why do you get angry when we point out also the attitudes of the "poor" tourists, is not it also looking at the problem from another angle? But no, on the road of your holy "mission", you prefer that we stone these "animals". Then, all of a sudden, we will have a clear society.
You cannot tolerate any moderate ideas. I do not like these men, and I do not want awards be given to them, but it does not prevent me from questioning the reasons of their acts and immoralities becase people are not born immoral. According to you this is protecting and defending them. Then there would not be a science branch called sociology!?
How do you suppose to get supporters from the community you oppose and want to change, as you have so categorical, definite, harsh and even dogmatic ideas towards turkish and muslim society on a larger scale? Given that I'm one of the most liberal and least patriarchal girls living in Turkey, in my opinion you can never get any support from women that you aim to help. You expect people to change in an instant after telling them "you are all wrong and all the things you believe are wrong". I think you have a dream, a real "dream".

"She likes the sound of her own voice" is a common insult directed towards WOMEN who speak their mind and are intelligent enough to be able to articulate their opinions well. It's the defence of the weak who are out-debated and feel intimidated by them.
We are lucky this is a written discussion and not face to face as it is well-known that this is exactly the kind of reaction that causes a violent response from the weaker side!

May I ask you to waste a bit of your invaluable time on me, and could you kindly tell me what I am trying to prove, and to whom. |
I think this could be the start of a beautiful friendship
