Typing Türkçe characters
|

Hi All,
Like many people here, I mostly type in English but have enough of a need for Türkçe characters that I need a way of easily typing them. But equally I do not want to have to change keyboards or upset my standard English keyboard layout. So I have created a customised keyboard layout which I have been testing for a few days and find pretty easy to use.
If anyone else wants to use it - help yourself.......
There is information about how to download it and install it on this page. It does not remove any of your existing key options from the standard English keyboard layout so there is no need to swap between keyboard layouts
This is based on the standard English (UK) keyboard layout. Assuming that people find it works OK and there is enough interest then I can make the same sort of thing based around the English (US) keyboard layout.
The extra characters that it easily provides are:
â  ç Ç é É ğ Ğ ı İ Ã® ÃŽ ö Ö ş Ş Ã¼ Ü û Ü
of course the most used ones will be:
ç Ç ğ Ğ ı İ Ã¶ Ö ş Ş Ã¼ Ü
Hope this proves useful to people

Genius Bod - I have just installed this. You are an angel! (or should I say an evil fairy?) I used to switch between keyboard layouts - but what you have just provided is so much simpler! It is perfect! Thank you very very much. I recommend it to others - it's great!

I'd be interested in a US English keyboard layout.

OK - no problem.
Give it few days so that people can try out the UK English one and see if they can suggest any improvements. Then I will have a go at creating a US English version.

Have you tried just going to ´Regional and Languages´ under ´Control Panel´ on your pc and adding Turkish to your languages?

yes, I know that way,I do the same now
but I was wondering if that program works, it is much more simple and easy, without switching anything.
thank you!

Hi all
Does anyone know if this was ever updated to use on windows vista? I´ve been switching between languages from the control panel when I want to type Turkish letters, but I find it very difficult to use this way as the letters are in completely different places when I do. This sounds so simple to use, I would love something like this as it would make things so much easier
Teşekkür ederim

I hope that it has been updated for my own sanity lol. I also have windows vista which means switching between languages. I have no idea then where any of the standard letters are as the order completley chages and it takes me about 10 minutes to even type a word . I have also noticed that I am learning words wrong as I am getting used to typing them with English letters and when I come to say them I say it like I was typing it.
I was also obviously in a stupid mood when I made my userame with Turkish characters as even signing in is a hassle

lol, oh thank god I´m not the only one suffering this, it takes me forever to type anything when I switch keyboard languages!! And yea I´m the same, because I´m writing the words without the Turkish letters I sometimes pronounce them the way I remember typing them, and my pronunciation is bad enuf as it is haha
Tis a nice username tho, unlike my very boring 1 haha, and I think you can probably scroll through the usernames that pop up when you put the 1st letter of your username, save ya the hassle of trying to put in Turkish letters haha

Ally - why don´t you use Turkish letters at the bottom of the the page that you can see under the ´send´ and ´clear´ buttons when you post something? Obviously this doesn´t help you if you are not typing in TC but for here its easier than swapping keyboards!

i know 1 even more easyer way - get used to typing turkish, then swapping keyboard languages won´t be a trouble at all. i typed in to my pc every note we took in turkish lectures and every homework we had to do, all 3 terms in uni, and after about 2 months i started to KNOW where is which turkish letter located, no trouble at all to find the correct one, although i can´t "see" them on my keyboard. just write turkish, a lot, and it sort of comes to your hands and you can swap keyboard and write turkish fast and easy with your eyes closed. i prefer to switch language on my pc to any other method coz it´s FAST AND EASY. get used to it.

I don´t have any problems at all with swapping from one to the other actually - but maybe it helps that I can touch type and that the Turkish characters (apart from ´i´ don´t actually replace any English letters - only punctuation keys - so it´s easy for me to remember where they are.

I agree. If you type enough notes and messages in Turkish you will very quickly remember where all the extra Turkish letters are located. It didn´t take me that long, and you can leave a reference sheet nearby whilst you learn the layout.

Yea no I do use the letters here, I never swap keyboards for TC, and actually a lot of the time I copy and paste from here so I can use the Turkish letters, it´s far less laborious than having to learn (blindly!!) to type all over again! haha. It´s great that TC has this facility, as some other websites don´t

Hey cool, well done you, unfortunately for me I don´t know if I have the time, patience and brain power left to try teach myself to type all over again as well as to teach myself Turkish lol, I´m a mummy of four ´darling´ children, two of whom are 2yr old twins... terrible twos x 2!! trust me it´s even worse than it sounds haha... But I might just try and give it a go, sure it will be another thing to help stop my brain turning to mush after countless hours of ´what does the cow say, what does the dog say etc. haha

Henry, did you write out the refrence sheet yourself? Or is there somewhere you can print off a version?

Hi Ally, the Turkish keyboard layout I used is basically the same as the qwerty style English one, with the i replaced by ı and the letters on buttons after p being ğ ü and the comma,
and the next row has ş and i after the l
and the bottom row after m is ö ç and the full stop.
I made my own template on a piece of paper and left it just above the keyboard until I was familiar with the Turkish layout.

You are using the same as me Henry - and the ´comma´ comes after the ş and i not the ğ and ü. Also don´t forget this format means that the question mark moves to where the dash ( - ) is on the English keyboard.

Oh right thanks henry, mine is completely different so, all my letters completely swap places when I change over, so I have to relearn where they all are, it´s a total pain

No, my computer is a ´mac´ so the layout must be slightly different to yours. The nice part is that it only takes 2 clicks on the toolbar up top to change the layout.

I don´t know where you are Pablahol, but if you normally use a Windows English (UK) keyboard then the alternative layout I have written extends that without having to remember where the Turkish characters are - they are simply accessed by holding down Alt Gr at the same time.
If you want to try this keyboard layout it is free to download from:
http://www.boddison.com/turkish/
You must extract the ZIP file before attempting to install the keyboard layout.
