I thought it would be a good idea to gather together all the phrases/words that we know are used in the Turkish language regularly but aren't necessarily formally taught in books etc
I have the obvious ones
Elinize saglik
gule gule giyin
gule gule kullan
afiet olsun
here are some others i know:
allah kavustursun (may god reunite you - said whenever a family member/friend leaves after a visit)
Allah rahatlik versin (goodnight)
zibidy - scuffy
basin sag olsun (said when there has been a death)
dedikodu - gossip
ekmek parasi - earning a living
estagafurulah (i may have spelt it wrong) but it is said to show modesty
I just thought it would make a really useful thread and fun to do....

I have learned that this is what you say to apologize to Allah. After swearing, etc.
I learned this when i was living in the Gambia. If we happend to discuss religions and someone said "there is no God" for instance, they who believed were quick to say this 
Like asking Allah for forgiveness.
I don`t know if it`s the same use in Turkey but i guess so, as it`s an arabic word for all muslims.

ops!! i just checked my big dictionary...and yes you were right...it is "estağfurullah"... i am ashamed of myself

yes i am native but but i had some arabic education when i was young and i always pronounced it as it is in original language and nobody has corrected me so far  but i feel so stupid

it happens to me once a year.i am supposed to be very good at turkish because i write texts where i work. that is why i felt so stupid

Hey, everyone forgets things sometimes.People who are native speakers of a language don't always get it right.Half the people i know still can't spell properly.Nobody gets it right 100% of the time so don't feel bad! And just remember if they pretend to know everything then they obviously don't.

+1000000 The best example of bad English is to be found on the translation forum ..by English members. How on earth they expect to get an accurate translation when they can't even write their own language is beyond me

I have noticed the terrible English on this forum. Wrong spellings and a lot of usage errors. Yikes...I want to correct them, but I'm sure that would not be a good way to make friends! I think some people are speaking Engish as a second language (I hope). There is also some Ghetto slang from time to time, like they are staight "out 'da 'hood" ENGLISH TRANSLATION "...coming from a neighborhood with many people of a low socio-economic status"

That was perfect grammar in my opinion. The ones I am speaking of sound like native speakers in their writing...but maybe they skipped a lot of school or slept through English class. Good job you guys who are 2nd (or 3rd) language proficient. I sound like a cave man in Turkish!!! Actually, America has a pretty bad educational system and it is easy for people to graduate and not really know how to write a coherent sentence or paragraph.

Pagliaccio, I don't know if you use that kind of vulgar words in your daily life out of internet but it's better that you stop using them on this forum, personally and as one of the moderaters here I don't want to see them. If you cannot stop it, go to a pys.
