You can postpone it if you are studying but after you graduate , you have to do it anyway and serve for a few months , I think 6 .
Tukish members can be more exact on this.
Greetings!

I think it's 35/40 maximum 40 but I think some of the natives will know better than I.

Can be called up any time after age 18. If you are in full time education you can postpone it until after you graduate. For this reason, many people do a part time masters while they are working and postpone it even more.

My boyfriend is turkish, and he finally finished the army service after 15 months at the end of last August. Even though I'm not very sure at this moment, I think he told me once that they must go to the army before being 30 years old.

After 18 year old, Military service call to army. but if you are student at that time u can delay it during ur education. and if u start another school, u can delay it again. when u are student, school inform military servise every year that u are still a student in this school. after u finish ur education school inform military servise and they call u to army. if u are graduated from a universty (it has to be 4 years), you have 2 options. one is 6 months as a soldier. other one is 12 months as a Unter leutnant and u get salary from governemt. but if u are graduated from high school. there is only one option 15 months as a soldier.

Yes, it is totally true..Also there is a way to do military obligatinon..If person works in abroad at least 3 years(with work permisson),he can do his military service with money(approximately 5112 euro) and he can do his service only for 21 days..

Interesting, having to pay your own government not to serve in the military.

I think it should be the other way around, them paying you. If your going to risk your life, isn't it worth anything? How does this government come up with this figure on how much you can pay? Can it be payed in installments or all at once?

it depends on how valuable you are to your government.
depends on how the gov treats the individual.
in some countries you owe a service to the country just being born in it. theres nothing like you choose to serve, but the system chooses you, just because you belong to the gov, your blood, your body, your mind is no yours but countries.

So for example you have a husband, wife and kids. In Turkey you must serve in the military unless you pay the government not too. (Not sure how fair that is) But ok, so your husband gets sent off to the military. How does the wife and kids survive? Does the husband get paid anything while in the military and sends the money back home? I just don't understand how the family is suppose to be taken care of..Anyone?

your family isnt so much important
important is the service to the country
the gov feeds the nation with patriotic slogans, that you wont find any excuse to avoid it.
moreover, you should take into consideration the background/history, if the country has gone through loads of wars, it is difficult to think the other way, plus theres always a sort "threatens" from all other nations, maybe, anyone can be your enemy, you better standby.

Well, he does get a tiny salary while in the military.

they get nothing, unless he dies! I am a consultant at Axa Oyak, an insurance company that is joint venture between a French insurer and the Army Pension Fund. We will be paying 12000 YTL to the family of every man who was martyred this weekend. Not much, but it will help a little.

Thanks Marion for sharing this. I feel so sad for these families. I wish there was a way, we could adopt families of wounded soldiers, etc in Turkey. Do you know if they have something like that?

My husband had to show proof that he had served his military time BEFORE they would issue a marriage licence to us. I don't know if it is like this everywhere in Turkey (maybe some marriage offices are more strict) but I imagine that most young men do their military service before marriage.
