Hi all,
I am going to Istanbul on the 18th November to see my fiancee Nesrin and am looking forward to the trip. We put an advert in a local supermarket REAL, advertising English lessons, my English is not bad but I am no teacher. We received a phone call today asking is it possible to teach a Turkish man the basic English language, I am a bit concerned because I would like to help and take up the offer but my English is not to teaching standards and I only have a week in Istanbul hardly enough time to teach the basic English language.
What do the members here think? should this guy come to our apartment in Istanbul or shall I go to him, of course Nesrin has to be there to translate some Turkish as he cannot speak any English at all. Would love some advice
Thanks

I would find out if he wants to be proficient in English speaking/listening as opposed to grammar/spelling. Once you determine this, I think it would be easier to know what kinds of books you will need to use to teach. I can recommend "Real Talk" English for speaking and listening. I used it to help my husband although he was fairly proficient with grammar/writing skills. I went to a University and asked what books they were using for English as a Second Language and got a wealth of information.

What do you think about the Callan Method? | Antimoon ForumThe Callan Method is based on actual classroom practice, on the psychological teacher-student relationship, and on their relationship to the language. ...
