The Night of Horror for the Tourist Girls in Taksim Square
|

Yesterday night on the eve of new year AS USUAL tourist girls (who were there with their boy friends) celebrating the coming of the new year have been assaulted verbally and physically by a group of 50 Turkish young people in Taksim Square. Even policemen could not save them. They had to take refuge in a pharmacy.
Here is the photos from a Turkish newspaper:

no body is blaming the whole nation. This happens every year. he was just trying to let people know and beware of that. Because when that happens to you, the whole time in Turkey might be a nightmare for you.

Here is a translation of the reader comments from the page in the link:
Bastards!-
These foreign people came to our country, whereas we are supposed to respect them and do our best to avoid irritating them in any way; there are certain hungry dogs amongs us; these boisterous bastards they take advantage of such a (special) night and attack them. Those foreigners have every right to blame us. Unless we get rid of those bastards among us, such incidents will continue. I am confident law enforcers will give the right punishment to the perpetrators. (01.01.2008 19:52:00 Cemil)
Urban bandits or bandits on mountains, where is the difference? It would be more proper to call this high treason.(01.01.2008 19:36:00 Use-polis)
Voila!
Whereas we Turks would once be proud of our humanistic values, we have begun competing with animals (in brutality). Congratulations on what you did! (01.01.2008 18:19:00 uğur)
Shame on you!
I am a Turk living in Germany. Such a thing would never occur in Germany. Germans point out to the same fact when speaking to us. This surely doesn't do justice to our image as Turks.
Disgusting!
... I would like to personally apoligize to those guests of ours . Those are certainly a pack of riff raff. That is not something to be expected of a decent Turkish citizen.

Foreign tourists celebrating in İstanbul’s Taksim Square were harassed by a group of intoxicated young men. The incident was discovered by İstanbul Police Chief Cerrah, who saw a pharmacy and sent a team to check on it, wondering why it was still open at that late hour. Two foreign women were hiding inside the pharmacy to avoid harassment on the street. The police dispersed the group of sexual harassers gathered in front of the drug store.
Another group of female tourists had to hide inside a Taksim hotel, again from aggressive young males sexually harassing them.

Don't you think that this has more to do with how the tourists behave towards the Turks? I can imagine that they'd drunk way too much and were maybe 'asking for it'??
I'm not trying to defend anyone, but I just wonder, coz these things happen in Amsterdam as well on new year's eve, and it's usually because of alcohol and not because people beat others just for 'fun'.

If a 6-line newspaper effort to report some girls have been molested by drunkards include the word "Turk" or "Turkish" in it 2 times and some dear friend posts it here with no comments...I get suspicious that they all carry peanuts instead of brains.
So, what is your problem?
In fact comments afterwards, seem to verify my suspicions..

and the mere fact of mentioning "turk" or "turkish" being linked with "sexual assault" in taksim square defames turkey as a whole?
i have turkish friends, and they admit that it is a disgusting thing that happens, but they don't think that this "fact of information" defames turkey in general.
just as the way the word "americans" are linked with the "sexual assault" that happens in new york every new year. they admit it happens there too, but they don't get too defensive about it, nor do they think it defames "america" in general. it is a fact, not a good information, but a fact never the less.
so don't get your panties in a twist, and be overly defensive about it.

it does bother me that the obscene curse wasn't deleted... yet. and even if there was negative comments that followed that thread, do you really think it defames turkey? there are still a lot of people willing to learn turkish language because they have a liking for turkey, irregardless of the negative posts here.
i think the issues are different for you. you were not arguing about facts anymore, rather, you are arguing on the basis of race. some "non-turkish people" post negative information about the events linked on this forum, and suddenly, the people who posted it and affirmed it with there threads are "peanut heads". would it make a difference if a "turkish" person posted that thread? it did come from a turkish newspaper, so i wonder why you are being offended about it.

I got very angry to those idiots when i saw it. Sorry for those girls and for their lovers. Its not an acceptable thing. I am really really sorry for them.
By the way its also very foolish way to judge all nation or compare such things with turkish culture. We all know that every country has got excellent and bad people. And i musnt be responsible or be punished for their faults. We should not try to create new prejudgements cos world is full of it and i think its enough. I think those idiots have a cultural degeneration and they should be immediately educated.

And it is very hard to try to shake of shame when fellow countrymen do shameful things.
Sometimes, when I see the English flag (white flag with red cross on it for those who aren't familiar with it)flying in England I feel uncomfortable and this has been brought about because the flag has become a symbol of the British National Party. I don't think political parties should be allowed to use a country's national flag for it's own use. The flag belongs to everyone doesn't it?

This happens anywhere and everywhere. When you add alcohol to the mix, people forget how to behave. I feel badly for these girls however, as we discussed in another forum, Taksim on New Years Eve is a potentially volitile situation. Am I the only one who thinks more security is needed in this area on New Years Eve? The disgrace is that the city of Istanbul wasn't well enough prepared to handle this problem. It isn't like there was no precident for it!

i dont think it would happen anywhere! did such things happen in new york, Sidney or London in new year eve?
those boys live in poor and ugly areas in istanbul and most of them have strict traditions at home..but in new year eves or such days they feel more free and feel like they can do anything they want..and in their oppinions, foreign girls and girls who wear a bit sexy clothes have no values and it is ok to disturb and touch them..but if the same thing happened to their sisters they would go crazy and kill who did it. And even worse one is that they are not minority..sad but true.
Turkish men have so many conflicts like that.they think sisters are to protected and holy but they can do anything just to sleep with other girls..they think mothers are holy but they can swear at others' mothers so easily..they think it is the biggest stain to have sex before marriage for girls but most of them go to brothels......
So please do not think it is a global problem it is one of f..king sociological facts of Turkey..

What point was that? Attacks in large cities are nothing new or peculiar to Istanbul. In particular attacks between those who who are or seem to be affluent and those who have little are not unusual at all.
What seems to matter is what publicity is given to the incidents. During the 80s in New York City there were many many attacks between different groups of people on each other.
There was the: Bernard Hugo Goetz, known as Bernhard or Bernie (born November 7, 1947) was dubbed the "Subway Vigilante" by the New York press.
"Subway Vigilante"
Then there were many "wilding" cases. These were pretty common in the 80s in New York, most were not reported. I was confronted by a gang of 30 young men aged between 9 and 16, but suffered no serious issues...(thanks to good luck and Aikido training) Most famous was the Central Park Jogger case in which 5 young men were convicted of the attack. Later the convictions were vacated:
convictions vacated
In 2002, convicted rapist and murderer Matias Reyes, serving a life sentence for other crimes but not, at that point, associated by the police with the attack on Meili, declared that he had committed the assault, and that he had acted alone. The DNA evidence confirmed his participation in the crime and identified him as the sole contributor of the semen found in and on the victim "to a factor of one in 6,000,000,000 people".
Unfortunatly Mayor Dinkins took the blame, even though crime actually was going down during his administration. That allowed Gulliani to win the election.
The root problem began in the 80s with the displacement of tenants via gentrification programs begun under the Kotch administration.
:Homelessness became a serious problem during the 1980s, specifically in the last two of Edward Koch's three terms as mayor (1978-199 . The city outlawed discrimination against gay and lesbian people in such matters as employment and housing in 1986. In 1989, Koch was defeated by David Dinkins in the Democratic Party primary in his bid for a fourth term, and then Dinkins narrowly defeated Republican Rudolph Giuliani in the general election to become the city's first-ever black mayor. Crime began a 15-year decline in 1990 during Dinkins's administration, but a combination of continued racial strife (such as that in the Crown Heights Riot in 1991), and an extremely weak economy (in January 1993 the city's unemployment rate reached 13.4 per cent, the highest level of joblessness seen there since the Great Depression) caused Dinkins' popularity to seriously decline (including a threat by residents of Staten Island to secede from the city)."
History of NYC 1978 to present
All of this is to say, crime happens everyplace.

I don't think so ciko - the unpleasant thing is that this sort of thing DOES happen in cities like New York and London - usually without the 'excuse' of deprived or excessively strict upbringing. The discussting event is on the hadlines in today's Turkish newspapers. A newspaper calls it as a bad tradition because it happens every year. This is really a shame for Turkey. I know many Turkish people are sad with the incident. But I do not understand why Turkish security forces let it happen. We will see if this "tradition" will take place again next year or not.

No New Yorker would sit near the door of the subway car due to the fact that standard operating procedure in the subways (for certain groups of people) is to grab the breast or crotch of a tourist woman, (they appear to look for women who look like tourists) and then grab whatever else is available as the door closes. I've seen it a number of times.
Now I would call that sexual harassment, but it's not on the news.

It is disgusting that they only paid a £40 fine! In the UK it is considered to be Sexual Assault. Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act makes it an offence for any male or female to intentionally touch another person sexually without his or her consent. A person guilty of this offence is liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years.

You are so right Sui, I think there were something like 3 or 4 young men murdered in the UK on New Years Eve, and one Old lady burned to death in her house and not counting the numerous drink fueled fights, attacks, drunk drivers etc etc and girls going out in just a pair of knickers - yes and that was it!

They are also taken into prison of Police Station first of all with the crime of breaking the peace of society in public areas...
but when the other side doesnt complain... it doesnt go further... if they do... what will happen lets think?
1) they would be supposed to stay longer than they plan in Turkey... which is not good for them
2) this is because the courts and law system works slow...
3) they will be in contact with police and lawyers etc... at least they will be seeing those idiots again...
4) sum up those all means their holiday will be wasted!

a couple of years ago i was reading in the news papers... if a woman wears a mini skirt and a man rapes her... he wouldnt be judged from raping... because she was wearing a mini skirt and tempting that man... funny isnt it... it was in France...

Speaking for France or UK doesnt matter dear, the truth here is the sick minds and idiots are everywhere... same for my country aswell...
This is a sad event but talking about and saying ha look at those animals... doesnt make any sense...
the guilty here is the mass media... if i was one of those cameraman... if i had seen that... i would throw my camera to the head of those idiots...
but they are running after money... instead of humanity... they are no different those animals aswell...

I agree that I use lawyers tricks to argue in some cases, but I have to correct you - I have never called Turkish Kurds anything other than citizens of Turkey. You have to accept non "pure blood white turks" are also Turkish otherwise you will have a life time of hate in you, which really will do you no favours - it will speed up the ageing process and make you old and give you a heart condition and I MAY NOT agree to marry you

I agree about racism, but what makes you think that people here do not feel equally strongly about other subjects?
Arguments are taken far too seriously here - I argue with Turks in the same way I would argue about whose football team is best - you argue and insult and go away smiling.
Unfortunately some non-Turkish members here behave as if you are personally slapping their face. It is very tiresome to have such anger among them always, but fun to see them feverishly sympathising with eachother by PM |
I agree that arguments are taken far too seriously and I have done that at times here. Look! I'm trying to make up for it There should be room for some joking around as well but seeing this is a serious matter I can't take it lightly..except I guess it is a little laughable to see how unintelligent people are capable of acting.
So yes, it is just an argument on a forum but racism and nationalism is something that has been really damaging in Turkey and it is something that I always try to fight in the real world. Anyone should have the right to fight for a subject they believe in as you started your message with.

OK I have been following this thread and think I have missed something. Is there a post that gives us the english translation of the newspaper report. Because everyone is talking about this horrific incident by these monsters...but from the pictures...picture 1)looks like some girl being grabbed but the girl behind her is watching and smiling!?! picture 2)can't really see anything but press taking pictures and the people watching, again, don't seem stressed they are watching with their arms round eachother, picture 3) just a girl crying with a guy, picutre4 ) they all look happy. I mean, I'm not saying that nothing bad happened, but it doesnt even look as if anyone was hit. If I was there with my husband and someone was sexually assaulting, I know he would hit the guy. Everyone still even has there drinks in their hands, surely if it was something serious there would be at least one picture of someone being hit, or they would have at least put their drinks down. I'm not saying nothing bad happened. I'm just saying I can't understand the newspaper report what it's saying, only the post where someone added quotes from other people about it. But from the pictures I can't see anything worse than what happened even in my tiny island at New Year.

Taksim on New Years Eve
I feel I have to post this alternative portrail of events in Taksim Square as opposed to the original post and the ensuing arguments and battle that commenced and errupted like a volcano. With accusations flying left right and centre, everyone knowing best and no-one actually there to witness the event.
I was once informed that the Zaman newspaper was no more than a pornographic paper, and regarded at the same level as the tabloid press i.e our Sun, Daily Mirror. They breed sensationalism by reporting untruths and exagerating events.
If you read down this report it says that ONE tourist woman from Australia was molested in the crowd and an IRANIAN man has been arrested for it. She hid in the pharmacy with her friends.
Now you can believe what ever you like, but I like to fall somewhere in the middle and tend not to hold too much stock on any reports, as they are always going to be slanted one way or the other, depending on the writers point of view.
So it seems that everyone jumps to the conclusion it was a Turk, (may be an easy excuse to accuse an Iranin), but I am saying that it is not right to be so judgemental before you know all the facts.
And as the New Year celebrations were actually cancelled in Taksim, this was an impromtu gathering - not that it makes any difference.

Quoting libralady: Taksim on New Years Eve
I watched it on the telly (I think it was in kanal D and It was the presenter was Ali Kirca)
There should not be any denial about it.
It was so obvious.
I am so ashamed of it.

What is your problem exactly,if you don't like Turkey or Turkish people what exactly are you here for! All you do is try to argue against things and be negative.Just seems kind of pointless thats all. |
Sorry, but if you were one of the girls in the photo, you would not talk like that. |
I am not promoting the incident in the slightest i am simply raising a separate issue with Aenigma which excuse me for saying say so doesnt really concern you. |
Sera stop being so deeply offended when anything negative is said about your boyfriend's country but not at all offended when it is about your own country! I have many Turkish friends. We are just arguing light-heartedly - how come Turks understand it but you dont?
You say to Kaddersokak that your comment does not concern him/her. Why does MY comment concern YOU |
I didnt at any point say that i was offended i would apreciate it if you could stop attemping to talk for me.I was just asking you why you persist with this constant arguing towards anyone who doesnt 100% agree with everything you say. This is isnt called Aenigma class! Maybe its time you realised that people have things to say which you might not like but that doesnt stop people saying them no matter how many times you try and belittle them. And as for your comment on 'concern' my post on this occasion did not concern Kaddersokak because it was not addressed to him/her.If you look back you will see it was directed at you no one else.

Well, actually here's a definition of debate...
Rule-based competitive debate is often encouraged in high schools and colleges. Often, it takes the form of a contest with explicit rules. It may be presided over by one or more judges. Each side seeks to win, by following the rules, and even by using some rules to break other rules, within limits.

You should know AEnigma, as the resident astrologer, being a Librian I believe in equilibrium, peace and harmony. I believe in being non-judgemental, and non-accusational. I dont believe that arguments solve anything, I can say that I have rarely seen a thread that is a real debate or discussion that does not end up like World War III. Even those that agree, fight! A while ago, a thread that ended up like this one, was locked so what is so different now? And as you so often state, everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is mine. I don't expect you to agree with it.

I'm just saying I can't understand the newspaper report what it's saying, only the post where someone added quotes from other people about it. yes some paranoiac people are in the habit of holding pkk responsible of every negative event in turkey. they accuse pkk even when they slip on the soap and fall down in bath. that is the easiest way of getting rid of the bitter realities isnt it? turkish state and it s people are true angels! non-turks and non-muslims do whatever bad in turkey...

it s so simple:
funny enough the turkish constitution and nationalists say, "whoever lives within the borders of the turkish state is a turk!"
so only a turk can be responsible of every act in turkey ha? hahah
