The Beard is Gone - Turkish Men Go "Naked"
|
1. |
10 Jan 2008 Thu 04:14 pm |
For decades, almost every Turkish man cultivated a magnificent moustache. And a great number grew beards, as well. Different beards were even emblems of different political affiliations. For example, extreme nationalists wore walrus moustaches. But the reign of the moustache may be over. Barbers are increasingly hearing the words "take it all off." More than half of all Turkish men no longer wear a moustache. Some say being clean-shaven is more modern, others that it is more hygienic. And in many cases, a woman is behind the decision.

I can't stand moustaches !!! especially the ones with bits of food in ------ ooowwwwaaaa
a clean shaven face is always the nicests.
but I hate this new fashion with young men of have these light fluffy beards or not shaving for two days. and I also hate bald heads when they have been shaven. you can always understand who is naturally bald and who shaves.
WHY do men think that woman actually like shaved heads !!! I prefer a mature man who is unashamed of his bald spot and maintains the hair he has got. His confidence shows his beauty !

Have they not started showing 'a girlfriend' on the philips ad yet? May be the 'Turban' brigade is opposing it?

, sorry there seems to be so much talk about Turbans on this forum, that I thought I might mention it as a joke here. It's clearly becoming an atmosphere of Turban phobia. I should shut up and not spoil this thread ! Sorry Roswitha.

Don't mind? Why would I mind, brother? It sounds funny, especially the English. I know I can use a dictionary and work it out the long way, but thought I'd save some time by asking. I AM a student of Turkish Language after all.

Hi Waseem - as Mr X says this is a jolly hard expression to translate and after a very funny conversation with my hubby we have found it very difficult to translate but here is what I can tell you !
Nur - light, glory, radiance
yağardı - from to pour
kılda - hairy
tabakhane - tannery where leather is produced
keramet - miracle or God given
as you can see the direct translation is really tough/nonsene. but it means something like this:
If God-given hairiness was useful, then the tannery would be heaven. (because you find a lot of hair/fur in a tannery)
This is the best I can do and this is the reason why I will never get a grip on this language !!!!!

Thanks for the help Lady Cacik ! So, the literal meaning of ''Kılda keramet olsaydı tabakhaneye nur yağardı'' would possibly be, "If miracle was in hair, then divine light would pour abundantly in the tanneries".?

My fiance recently grew a beard and he looked very manly like the main character in "300" then he shaved it off. I like when a man sometimes has a beard, sometimes a goatie, sometimes moustache, sometimes clean shaven. They look so different, like different men without all the guilt.
