Is there no end to the madness? Will Turkey ever be a democratic country?

A more realistic question: Is there anywhere one can find out why it was banned and for how long it will last?

No, this is all it says:

"BU SİTEYE ERİŞİM ENGELLENMİŞTİR

Ankara 11. Sulh Ceza Mahkemesi, 24/04/2008 tarih ve 2008/468 nolu kararı gereği bu siteye erişim TELEKOMÃœNİKASYON İLETİŞİM BAŞKANLIĞI'nca engellenmiştir.

Access to this web site is banned by "TELEKOMÃœNİKASYON İLETİŞİM BAŞKANLIĞI" according to the order of: Ankara 11. Sulh Ceza Mahkemesi, 24/04/2008 of 2008/468."

I was in the middle of watching a brilliant series of clips so hopefully it won't last for too long. Last time it was like a week or so

Apologies, there clearly must be some real evil on youtube which they feel they have to save the turkish nation from, possibly even iblis itself! Of course the simple human being is not capable of knowing what to and what not to watch, it is good we have such strong leaders to show us the right path

It's just a play on words....a "bed" person might be someone insults Turkishness........or someone who posts photos of famous people and says it's them.

You must be so sad now that "Scrubs" has stopped filming.....I hope you have new scripts to read!!

Azade, I'm sure you're grateful to the Turkish government who really cares about your morality and drives the temptation to observe the bed western world away from you, but in case you felt like rebelling against the Big Brother, here's Caliptrix's way:

Hi there,

Some TC users complained about this one, and one guy gave a solution:

"Internet Explorer

[Use Proxy Server for your LAN]
[Address: 66.98.238.8] [Port: 3128]

Voila! Now, you have Youtube.
Problems with some other sites rejecting anonymous connections? Then unselect [Use Proxy Server for your LAN] option. Remember to tick it again when you need Youtube."

Why are you doubting yourself with searching a democratic country? As there is existing one?

Being democratic means to be able to reach anything you want? is the only definition for that? come oooooonnn

If someone bans something on internet, there is other way(s) to reach it...

and as caliptrix mentioned.. if youtube so much important for you, use proxy!

Ok let me give you some more information and an efficient way:
This method is based on data sending and taking from another server than your official service provider. For that reason, that doesn't give you any insurance of security. If you want to use this method, this may give your private informations to other people. So, don't use this way for private websites such as banks, email servers, or another website which you enter by giving your username+pasword combination.

In the step 5, you can check or uncheck the function. Use this only when you want to enter to youtube.com or another banned website, and when you finish, just go back to this step 5 and uncheck it.

1.) Find some proxy server IP addresses from these websites:
http://www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html
http://www.samair.ru/proxy/
http://www.findproxy.com/

These addresses are like this: IP until ":" and the rest is port number;
203.144.160.251= IP of te proxy
: = separator
8080 = port number

As sometimes proxy websites maybe malfunctioned or doesn't work, you have to find the proper proxy IP everyday or whenever you feel it doesn't work

2.) Copy thee proxy addresses with their port numbers into a file, such as a text file by opening Notepad of your Windows.

3.) Now we must check if that proxy works properly, fast or not. Go to this site:
http://www.checker.freeproxy.ru/checker/
and paste the IP addresses with the ports from your notepad into the website, and click "check proxy"

4.) You will see a table of these proxy servers. It will say us if they work or not. You will see this: "HTTP: Proxy is working!". Ignore the other proxy addresses and just pick the IP address with port number of this working proxy. such as "203.144.160.251:8080"

5.) Now if you use Internet Explorer, look at the menubar;
Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan settings
You will see two boxes, the second one should be checked (click it): "Use Proxy Server for your LAN"
Address and port number textboxes will appear. Write the address as I explained IP address and write the port as I explained the port number like;
Address: 203.144.160.251 (this is just an example, and this address may not work)
Port: 8080 (this is just an example, be careful. you have to find your own working proxy server)

6.) now, click "ok" and try to enter to youtube or another banned website. If it doesn't work, uncheck the last step "use proxy", and then find another working proxy server.

Be careful! Take care of yourself.

Thanks for your help it is greatly appreciated I hope someone has had better luck than me though I can't get the proxy solution to work.

It is not about something such as youtube being banned, it is the fact that a court puts a ban on something so harmless. It is outrageous and highly criticizable, and if someone can't see that I think they should take a look in the mirror and check their values.

FOR IE
tools-->connections-->LAN settings
then check 'use automatic configuration script' box
and then, copy and paste below into that box..

http: //rosinstrument.com/cgi-bin/proxy.pac

ps. get rid of the space between 'http:' and '//'

It should work.
Once you finished watching youtube..un-tick the check box

Are you aware of the fact that courts are not deciding this by themselves? A person applies to court and claims that Youtube is broadcasting harmful videos, then they decide to block it...

This is understandable for me! This doesnt mean that i like it. But that person also have the right to claim about this fact. And turkish courts are responsing it.

The content of the court or claim can be ridiculous, but i dont care... youtube will be accessible again. But with this event you cant say Turkey is not democratic, it is not i know but because of other issues... not with banning Youtube.

And almost the same videos are in myspace aswell.

The sad thing about this topic is, when there are thousands of things to fix in my lovely country. some people are spending their time with such nonsenses...
This should have been what you are talking now...

If there are so many things that need to be fixed in your country, why are the courts even taking the time to ban youtube? Instead of discouraging this kind of lawsuit it rewarded with the restriction of people's right to view what they choose. Sorry Sui...but this issue is at the crux of what is wrong with Turkey and every nation that claims to be free....civil liberties in your country and all over the world, including my country are being limited by governments. People should NEVER allow this to happen.

You should have known better than me! Courts are not deciding by themselves you know... there are laws... and judges are using these laws... if you have enough proves to convince the judges that they are suitable for that... then you win! this is like this everywhere!

This story is not different than the courts are made for marlboro cigarettes or a person who slides and fells down in McDonalds because of the floor is wet and he didnt recognize it because the sign wasnt turned to him.

On other hand, civilized societies? there is no such thing that would dare to make moves to make things better! because the economical power in country are not at their side. I know lots of people who covered their heads because their husbands was in good contact with AKP and they want to take business from them Its all money!
That is more important than our freedoms unfortunately...

The people who aware of the facts is about 50 percent in turkey lets say, but 40 percent of them are not couraged to say something against to government rules. because they are afraid that their business will be ruined. so 10 percent is not capable to do anything.

You're right Sui. Unfortunately, people all over the world are turning a blind eye to the freedoms they are loosing. Today it is youtube in Turkey...tomorrow who knows. In the US we are imprisioning people in Guantanamo without cause....tomorrow it could be me or someone else who is imprisioned for no reason. People fail to fight over these things because it doesn't effect them directly or they trust their governments, or because they just don't understand. It's sad really.

Who cares about the procedure for banning, it is the fact that a court interferes and decides what a whole nation is allowed to see. If there truely were harmful videos on youtube, they should just contact the staff and I'm sure they would remove them. It is laughable that something so stupid as a video of Atatürk's head placed on a dog's body or whatever it is this time can cause a banning. It is single, ignorant persons who post something like this and clearly there's no need to take it seriously.

I would also much rather focus on more important issues but when I do so I tend to be called a liar and much worse words in the book. Although when you look at this as a princip it is quite grave indeed. There is so much censorship everywhere and is is used as a tool to shape the nation in the way the people on top of the ladder wants, politically that is.

Azade is absolutely right. It's true people sue McDonald's or tobacco companies. Yet still the government doesn't ban them. Or at least I've never heard of closing a McDonald because somebody slipped there.

If somebody has a problem with youtube, they should sue the site or the author of a given film. Banning the whole site is an insult to Turks. It's the government telling them they are incapable of deciding what's ok to watch themselves.

If watching Ataturk's head on a dog's body may cause trauma to sensitive Turks, I wonder if redtube.com (a free porn website) is banned too.

If watching Ataturk's head on a dog's body may cause trauma to sensitive Turks, I wonder if redtube.com (a free porn website) is banned too.

I am imagining the increased traffic to this site when the men here read that it is free porn!

Only the men? Aren't you curious too?? lol

oh someone honest finally!!! but females are the only responsible for porn! why do they let themselves to be used? hmmm?

ok we man are sick minded bastards, but why angel females are let them to be used?

It was a JOKE!! Of COURSE there will be women who check it out too!
That said, I'm pretty sure anyone can easily find the statistics to prove that men watch more porn than women.

Is this because Porn industry is over females? Did you see any male picture on the cover of Playboy magazines?
