Yep.
Eş is like "equal partner" and it works for both husband and wife.
It also marks you out as more of a enlightened couple, sexism-wise.
Koca (husband) and hanım (wife) are words that clearly have a difference in standing between the two people.

Yes you are on the true way Canli
just wanted to mention that koca used here... comes from the "kocaman" as some words change in spoken language... that kocaman forms into "koca"
generally koca means big huge as kocaman when it is used as an adjective.

Agree. I hate the use of karım (unless it is a very old amca, who doesn´t mean it that way), so couldn´t even bring myself to write it!

My Ex-wifes name is "Carrie", so I could never use "karı" in the presence of my new wife, (or not in her presence).
I think it is "ironic".
