where "Bosphorus" name come from?

Bosphorus comes from a Thracian word which means "passage of the cow", deriving from the legend of Io who was one of many lovers of Zeus. When Hera, Zeus´ wife, suspected her husband being involved in a love affair with Io, Zeus converted Io in a small cow and tried to send her away from Hera´s rage. She (the cow) swam across the strait but Hera discovered it and she sent big flies after the cow to bite and disturb her all the time, ending Io in the Aegean Sea (thus named Ionian sea).

In 1502 ingenious Leonardo da Vinci did a drawing of Bosphorus ´Golden Horn"bridge which was never built.It was designed as a perfect pressed bow)

Janissary, do you know if the legend you posted is the only legend about Bosphorus? I´m asking because this seems like a very old legend.. I mean it reaches back to Zeus.. who is not even a character in the Turkish literature. It would be interesting to hear more about this..

it is the only legend about Bosphorus.....details in Jak Deleon book,btw gorgeous read
Why Zeus has to be a character in Turkish literature?Thrace had its pantheon of Gods and Bosphorus is a Thracian word.Istanbul was not exclusively Turkish)and Thrace was taken all over by Turks in 14th century.surprise?))))
btw,I always thought Polish educational system is the best one or...you were just teasing janissary?
