"For women, it is difficult to participate in politics in Turkey; there are many obstacles. Women are stuck beneath a glass ceiling. When it comes to local politics, it is even harder for women," said Ãlknur Üstün, chairperson of the Ankara branch of the Association for Education and Supporting Women Candidates (KA-DER).
Üstün has a point -- only two of the 81 metropolitan municipalities will be run by women mayors over the next five years. Of a total of 923 district municipalities, 15 of them will have women mayors. There are many small towns in Turkey, but only four of them will have women mayors.
Even the number of women candidates nominated for the local elections was low: 18 from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), 34 from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), 45 from the Republican People´s Party (CHP), nine from the Felicity Party (SP), five from the Grand Unity Party (BBP), 33 from the Democratic Society Party (DTP), 37 from the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), three from the Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), 37 from the Democrat Party (DP) and 52 from the Democratic Left Party (DSP). But from the very beginning, most of these women were not in a position to be elected.

A pity, Turkey is one of the few countries that had a female prime minister, a fact to be proud of! Now more women in local politics too please!
