Not many people go to Turkey and survive being bitten by the 'bug' Catwoman.

As for me, the minute I step out of the plane (whichever airport I land at) I feel I have come home. It doesn't matter what the weather is like, hot, cold, sunny or raining I just feel like I am where I should be and I feel so happy.

I join the club, Lyndie. I've been there only twice, but i felt exactly the same. When i went to Türkiye wihtout my parents knowledge (of which it is a miracle that i survived without being raped, robbed or even harmed), you'd think i'd feel insecure, scared and lonely.. but I never felt as strong as then. I had my goal, i had my love and i was gonna get it all right, right at the place i felt home. When i flew over Istanbul I could just feel it.. When i got out of the bus that drove me to Izmir.. Ohh need i say more.. I miss it. I miss it very very much.

I have been to Turkey three times, butI'm definitely planning to go there again. Before going there I visited a number of other countries but none of them (but for the UK's rural areas)impressed me so much. All the big things: the architecture, the landscapes as well as the petty ones: men fishing on the Galata bridge, crowds passing passing me by in Istiklal caddesi and the banana nargile smoked with friends made me stand agape unable to utter a single word. Even kokorec couldn't spoil the pleasure of experiencing Turkey. However, I am far from being a Turkophyle. I loved that country enough to start learning the languge, I made wonderful friends there, I put on five kilogrammes devouring irresistable Turkish specialities and I would be more than happy if I had a chance to spend a year or two working there. And, although I'll never put a Turkish flag on my wall, Turkey will always be a special place for me to return to.

Did you try it?? Aferin sana! Maybe I will next time, but it doesn't sound that appealing to me..

Mind you, we have something similar and I never had it here either..
How is it prepared?

Not appealing? Kokorec?
We have kokorec in Greece, but I find our "version" disgusting. Turkish one is delicious though. Try it next time

Ahmmm..no thanks! The smell put me off trying it even before I actually got enlightened about what it is made of. If you don't mind, I'll stick to what I call meat -> and the outlet of sheep's digestive system is anything but that

Smell was what troubled me too, the first time I was asked to try kokorec. But as I m so curious about different tastes, i found the courage to taste it. And it was spicy and delicious. Now, the information about the sheep's digestive system is something i successfully blocked somewhere in the back part of my mind, while eating it

Korkorec is tripe in England. İf you have ever seen tripe in a butchers shop it basically looks like a pile of greyish fur. İt is indeed the lining of a sheeps stomach. İt absolutely stinks when you cook it. My friend had a pet shop and she used to cook it and sell it for dog food. İ could never eat it in England. İ couldnt even have it in the house. But İ have tried it twice in turkey. The first time was in a friends house. Is was just fried in olive oil with no spices and was like eating stinky rubber!

The second time İ tried in Mersin because İ was assured it was delicious and actually it did not smell too bad. İt was very spicy and but even the spices could not disguise the taste for me and although İ tood several bites hoping it would improve for me it made me feel sick. So İ re named it 'cockroach' and did give it to a passing dog! My friend however thinks it is absolutely delicious and went crazy when İ gave mine to the dog! So its a matter of taste İ suppose (like everything) but for me YUK!

This is what I have just done - I gave my (disgusted) opinion about kokorec! The smell (reek) stopped me but the ecstatic expression on my friends's faces was comparable only to my face while eating kadayif Ladies, why don't we make a deal - if you promise to keep your hands off kadayif, i will gladly leave all the kokorec in the world to you

I'm glad you agree but it's funny that Meltem mentions kokorec and mussels as it is what reminds me of The Night of Turkish Culinary Nightmare I went through in Ankara. First, going to a pub, my friends had kokorec and then, on our way back to the hotel they stopped at a street stall to have a snack. To my horror they would have..mussels. Thus, my list of things not to eat extended to three positions: kokorec, mussels and iskende (I'm not sure about the name but it's a sour sheep soup)

I never had midya in Turkey, probably forgot to, but I do like them, as its a very common dish here in greece. As for Iskembe, this is in my NEVER-T0-EAT-EVEN-IF-I'M-STARVING list!

I will definitely add my comments about the whole kokoreç/cockroach thingy as soon as i will have eaten it
I actually eat anything, the only things i didn't eat for years were peanutbutter and those banana-marshmallow/sweets kinda things. But peanutbutter is no longer in the disgusted-zone.

And i sure do love midye tava. Btw, i keep forgetting the turkish name for kalamarakia? It comes close but i don't remember it. Anyone here to freshen up my memory?

Kalamarakia comes from kalamari and it's kalamar in turkish. Like most of the greek words, you cut an i in the end and there you have the turkish word.

haha yes, we agree about midye and kokoreç, but I'm afraid again we don't totally agree eachother because I really likee işkembe.

My never ever be eatens could be snails, frog legs, insects, dogs and brain.

aah and a small note: even if no one really seems to be caring around, I try not to consume mussels, I just eat them a few times in a year because they're not very healty they take inside all the toxic things in the sea like a sponge and if you eat them frequently over years the chemicals are accumulated in your body. You should be really very sure about where they come from.

I was just listening 'Yaşamak ne güzel şey' from Nilüfer, while reading 'Leven in Turkije' (life in turkey), a magazine about.. well turkey

And i was filled with a silent sadness that i'm here. So no, you are really not the only one who feels weird sometimes I wonder how Türkiye has been able to crack me open so much for emotions, where i actually always was a quite cold, distant girl. I've become full of fire and each emotion has become so much stronger. Ohh but i must stop talking like a melancholic fool.

Well I remembered this forum when I was eating my first (and probably last) kokoreç last night. I always thought it looked delicious, but had never seen it cut open.. which was when I started to doubt if i wanted to eat or not. From the outside it looks really nice and crispy, but when it gets cut you see the inside which is sort of white and 'slimy wet..' Being fully aware of what was inside, I wanted to try anyway as I had been curious to it for such a long time.

First I thought it was not too bad. Im rather fond of things that are crispy and fat at the same time But the real crispy parts that are dark have a very heavy taste and i didnt really like it.. and the very fat parts feel like snails in your mouth.. I probably had too many thoughts while eating it, so I liked the first few bites and then found it less an less attractive till I ordered an adana durum

Kadir told me that if Turkey joins the EU, this will be forbidden. I wonder why? (especially after having read they have similar food in Belgium and Greece?) And İ ate brain in france, so I wonder what the would be wrong with bağırsak?

I'm working towards being a "Turkey addict". I have a big "evil eye charm" above my bed which watches over me. I play turkish music at work (even if not everybody appreciates it!) and I have different photos of Istanbul on my computer as screensaver!

Quoting Lyndie:

Not many people go to Turkey and survive being bitten by the 'bug' Catwoman.

As for me, the minute I step out of the plane (whichever airport I land at) I feel I have come home. It doesn't matter what the weather is like, hot, cold, sunny or raining I just feel like I am where I should be and I feel so happy.

Oh yes.I feel the same. When I listen to müezzin i feel i am at home.Just love Turkey and wanna be there.Seeing and reading anything aboot Turkey makes me sad so sad,cos i cant be there.
My turkish friend says i was a türk in previous life.
