There is nothing to digest (may be alot to digest for "Johnny Turkish" ) here because Ottomani armies were consisted of christian converts mainly..
All janissaries until certain time, were Christians..All their generals/pashas were christians too.
Sirbians, Albenians, Bulgarians, Greeks -especially in the navy- you name it..
When you think along that line , when they decided to take muslims into janissaries, the army never won a substantial battle again..

is it a part of a lecture?or you have just dropped in to call the tune?
Since when janissaries Had been in the navy?I was taught that it was infantry force.
you seem to have special likeness in janissaries-theh ,so brush up your knowledge on themjust a prompt

I dont think liking or not liking them is not the question here.
They were the slave army of the time.
And maybe yes, it could have been a part of lecture
But I never said ´the navy had janissaries´!!
If you check the most famous Ottoman navy commanders, you will find that most of them were christian converts..Greeks specially..

Why do you continue to imagine that anyone who disagrees with you must have some connection? Why is it so hard for you to understand that people just disagree with you?
Is your ego so enlarged that you are unable to comprehend anyone disagreeing with you unless they are part of a plan or some anti-TheHandsom group? Or is it your Turkish blood that makes you prefer to see conspiracy theories rather than obvious truths?

Stop being aggressive AE
No need to be..
Go and start reading from the beginning of this thread..
I am sure you will see that you did NOT say anything about the topic at all.!!!
Can you see how linear you are here?
You are ´imagining something without any parameters here´ and in the end you are trying to defend your imagination. !!!!

I didn´t say anything about the topic no - but I committed the crime of joking with someone you argued with and nothing seems to upset you more
Anyway I have no wish to further spoil this thread so go back to calling me Islam Supporter (by the way you were calling me that 6 months ago too! ) and I will refrain from calling you Christian supporter and imperialist

Janissaries had been problem throughout the Ottoman history and there was no war won by the help of them.On the contrary, there were times that they refused to go to a war and stayed in Ãstanbul to loot the city in the lack of authority. That´s why it is called "Auspicious Incident" when Sultan Mahmut abolished the force in 1826.

You reminded me one of the early threads I wrote some times ago here Upsy Daisy
http://www.turkishclass.com/forumTitle_28994
I think Janissaries was the best army of the time at the beginning..
But the corruption came later on.
Muslims were not accepted at the start but it was a kind of nice job, so the muslim rulers (pashas vezirs etc) started to put their own people into janissary units..
Anyway..
I am glad you are out of the safety of the chat room and see you more around here

Just a litte info; Ottoman army´s hitting power in battles was always "Týmarlý Sipahi"s who were light cavaliers and those were defending right & left wing of the army as well as attacking. Janisseries´ and Kapýkulu soldiers´ duty was to protect Sultan. Kapýkulu soldiers at first decided to be chosen among "devsirme"s but since they were not good at horse-riding, all were started to be chosen among Turkmens. And all Týmarlý Sipahis were Turks & Turkmens as well. Actually its well known fact Turks, Turkic tribes, Mongols using light cavaliers in battles in central asia which were very good at fighting on horses and which was a key factor for Turks to win a battle during middle age and beginning of new era. And when the firearms started to become popular in battles during 18th century, cavaliers lost their importance and that was the downfall time of Ottoman army...
