Herkese merhaba
We have been invited to a wedding here in Lefkoþa and I believe money is given as a present, how much would be a reasonable amount? They are more acquaintances than close friends but I don´t want to appear mean or be too over the top either. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Either 50 TL or a " çeyrek altýn" would be enough if he is not a close frien.

We gave more than 50YTL and the bride had a lovely little white wedding bag, that guests put money into, privately! (I must say it was bulging with cash by the end of her walk round the guests)

For the sake of AE, you need to explain what a "frien" is..

I did want to ask Alex what ´consuetudes´ are. Not trying to pick him up on his English but I´m sure he must have meant something else.

Humblest apologies to Alex - I looked ´consuetude´ up in the English dictionary and apparently it means ´custom´. However, I never heard this word used before in my entire life! Just goes to show you learn something new every day!

For the sake of AE, you need to explain what a "frien" is..
Frien is those who never call you in your bad times but still expect to be called "friend" and expect you to give them money in their weddings. they can never be a proper "friend" Therefoe i removed "d".

I would like to teach some English to the Brits too :
Present simple - common mistakes
Common mistake
I working in London.
Correct version
I work in London.
Why?
The gerund ing form is not used in the present simple.
==========
And I wont accept less buttering up than earlier one...

I can honestly say I have NEVER heard any English person use this phrase!

I doubt the educational standard/ethnic origin of the kind of people you chat to theH
PS Awwwwwwwww jealous of the buttering up?
