What is the difference between cami and camii?

cami is any general mosque.... but  camii ıs used when you have a specıfıed name for the mosque, example sultanahmet camii

cami is modern turkish, camii is a little ottoman turkish, both has same arabic origin meaning the place which brings together people. the problem is arabic ayn letter, at the end of camii there is an arabic letter ayn, in ottoman turkish you can write it, in modern turkish a little hard to write.

originally the word mosque ´cami´  came from what youre talking about..a combination of things.. but now you can use ´cami´ as a noun to mean mosque as well as an adjective to mean a combination of things

and by the way theres no point of studying FORMAL arabic unless youre interested in studying the quran, other than that you should study COLLOQUIAL arabic... as that is what people use

In Ottoman Turkish  cem  means gathering together, (math) addition,  The words cami, cemevi, cemiyet (society, association), cemaat (congregation, assembly) are  from the same root : cem.
