Hi, can someone please translate this:

YALAN SÖYLEMENİ İSTERDİM...

" Bana yalan söylemeni isterdim aslında.Çünkü insan ancak;
kaybetmekten çok korktuğu bir şey için yalan söyler... "

I USED TO WANT TO LIE...

´I used to want to lie to me (myself) actually.  But people lie because they are afraid of losing something...´

my try but not sure because punctuation seemed odd.

I agree. I don´t know where he got the ´used to´ bit.

I think it says

I wanted you to lie.

Actually I wanted you to lie to me.......

My try

just realised that I left out the ´want to´ part {#emotions_dlg.shy} - but as for where ´he´ got the ´used to´ bit

winmekmak - ben isterdim  I used to wish (or can be want)

that said i´m not saying my version was correct i´m only learning and it was just my try.

Yes-you´re right-I´m an idiot!

For ´used to´ you take the 3rd person singular of the simple present tense and add the past personal ending.

ister=dim  I used to want.

yalan soylemen is literally ´your lying´ so ´yalan soylemeni isterdim´ is ´I used to want your lying/you to lie.

Apologies!

apology certainly accepted! but can you explain ´soylemeni´ to me please?  not sure how that´s constructed.

I wish you lied

or

I would like you to lie

or

I prefer that you lied.

My attempt.

Take any verb, knock off the k and add the personal ending.

eg

gitmek to go

gitmem my going

gitmen your going

gitmemiz our going.

So if you want to say ´I don´t want you to go´ you say in effect ´I don´t want your going´

Gitmeni istemiyorum.

or What do you want me to do? is What do you want my doing?

 Ne yapmami istiyorsun?

I have to go=gitmem lazim (my going is necessary)

something most of you usually confuse :

isterdim: I used to want OR I would want

giderdim: I used to go OR I would go

etc

Used to - there must be a habit or repeated action. You usualy did in the past. But  you don´t do it at the present. Give up etc.

You are right. It isthe same form.

But here there is a wish or imposible thing. It is similar to "wish".

wishing sample

You are in The U.K. and I am in Turkey.

Şimdi yanımda olmanı isterdim.

Habit or repeated action in the past.

I don´t smoke now.

I used to smoke at least 20 cigarets in a day.

Günde 20 sigara içerdim.

I used to like listening to fairy tales when I was a child.

Çocukken masal dinlemeyi severdim.

Easy to recognise. habit or action in the past or wish.

Maybe I was wrong.

It may be possible to use "used to". I am not a expert.
