 yes kanka is translated literally as blood brother.. but would you ever call your friend as blood brother in english ? i dont think you would..

so the closest translation i thought would be buddy..(very close friend)

Haklısın (you are right), we would never call a good friend ´blood brother´.

In Australia and England we use ´mate´ a lot. 

I think in America, and probably Canada as well, they would use ´buddy´ or ´bud´ more commonly. ´Bro´ is also used there. (abi gibi)

@zeytinne - actually ´body´ and ´buddy´ don´t sound the same in English - different vowel sounds.  

I think Turks may have a problem with the ´u´ . I remember a guy in Urfa who wanted me to teach him how to say ´funny´ because with him it came out as ´fanny´ ! 

I see a similar problem with foreigners. They can´t say "ü" properly. They say it like "eww"
