Further thoughts ;
"Sevmek " has an old turkish root -seb [istemek , sevmek ]
" topladukumin tutar man , sabdükümin yiyür man "
[ bulduğumu tutarım, sevdiğimi yerim ]
Irk Bitig [ 9th century ]
==================================
whereas beğenmek comes from - begen / begel
its root - beg + e + In
beg -----> bey ---> In old times this word was a title of someone who was governing an area, someone who was holding power over an area. In modern Turkish , it is a title of respect for a man. " Ali Bey " ===> Mr. Ali [Gentleman Ali]
So, this verb [begenmek ] was used in old turkish to give something or someone a value with power.
In modern Turkish it is hasn´t got that strong meaning. However, it is still have meaning which we use when we give some value to something or someone ;
Bu tavrını beğendim ---> I liked this attitude of yours. [ by saying that, we show our appreciation and giving value to your attitude ]
Arkadaşını beğendim ---> I liked your friend. [ At first sight and brief meeting i liked him/her and now i give him/ her some value ]
But this value might not last long as we know him/her better. It needs more emotions and feelings involving to make it longer.
===========================================
- you can like [ beğenmek] things or people at first sight, whereas sevmek takes time, it needs bit more time and it last longer liking.
- You like [beğenmek ] by seeing and looking at it, whereas you love [sevmek] with your heart and feelings. Even for simple things.
For example ; You are about to buy a bag ; you say ;
"Bu çantayı beğendim" when you just before buying it. Cos you liked its shape, or outward appearance.
After a while, as you are using that bag, you start liking it more with your feelings involve in it.
"Bu çantayı sevdim. İyi ki almışım ! " ---> I love this bag, Its good that I bought it !
Another example ;
You are going to buy a house, and viewing a house, after that you say that you like it as it looked good and comfortable to you and you say ;
Evi beğendim ---> I liked the house. It was good to my eyes.
If you say ;
Evi sevdim ---> I loved the house. I felt good feelings for that house, I liked it more with my heart.
==================================
Sometimes we can´t use "beğenmek"
Such as ;
We can´t say " Çayı beğeniyorum " Instead , we say " Çayı seviyorum" ---> I love tea.
But we can say "I liked the colour of this tea [you made] "
Çayın rengini beğendim ---> I liked the colour of this tea.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the end, with "sevmek" more emotions and feelings involves and stronger , deeper and long -lasting liking. And it is used alot more than beğenmek.
