How does one express the idea of something being hypothetical? Is it done with the -miş past tense or the -cekti suffix or something else?
For example, if you did something your mother would not like:
şu yapan annen istememişsin
şu yapan annen istemecektisin
your mother would not want you to do that

Annen bunu yapmani istemezdi.
I would say it this way because the construction I would like to/I wouldn`t like to is generally expressed with isterdim/istemezdim.

I would say it this way because the construction I would like to/I wouldn`t like to is generally expressed with isterdim/istemezdim. |
But then 'mez' + past time suffix goes only for the construction with i would like to/ I wouldn't like to?
How is it in the other cases then?

In English I would like to and I would want to are synonims, arent they?
So,in my opinion this suffixes go for the case bod is asking about. But since I am not native English, neither native Turkish ,and thats just my fair guess, maybe somebody will give a better idea

I meant something else
There are also other sentences in wish you use 'would' like:
- What would you do?
- I think he would not go if he knew this.
- My mum would never let me do that.
So not only 'would like' and 'would want'.. but there are other sentences with 'would'

Yes - I am referring to hypertheticals rather than preference. Let's take a few more examples:
Ataturk would not be happy with you for thinking the way you do!
If I were you I would go out tonight.
Your mother would not approve if she knew what you are doing.
In all cases, it is not real, it suggests what would be the case if circumstances were different!

The nearest thing i think of is the future tense with a reported modifier
meaning
would not be .... olmayacakmış
But i'm not sure
But, how would you say
' İf i were you '.. at first place Türkçede ?
