I just want to ask all Turks/muslisms a question.
Is it not hard to fast for a whole month? I mean could not starve for that amount of time and especially not drink. Is it not unhealthy to fast for such a long period of time.

ALLah create Us and give us excillent life.. we can take breath enough.. isLam got rules we have to do smtng fo aLLah(c.c) like pray 5 time like fast so many thngs...why we have to give smtng to him too.. coz human are perct..1 month i never feel im hard..actually i feel tht i bcme more strong in this holy month..if allah give some hard duty be sure show some easy way too.. and 1 month u can look urslf u are really patient or not..u can teach smtng fo urbody. Like isLam say..alcohol , gamble..,sex with other ladies who not married jst HARAM... why isLam said like tht.. coz if you play gamble you can lost urmoney urwife urhome your everytng..and if money easy come alrdy haram thn easy go... you drink alcohol.. loose yourbrain and doing smtng wrong.. sex .. also same.. But who really dunno anytng about isLam and not search well.. they thnk isLam jst bring terorist ...Wat we want aLLah give us.. Now our turn to give allah this is duty fo isLam..

Hi Saucysue
Its not really all that difficult to fast. We can eat and drink when its dark. We also get up a bit earlier during ramazan to have a little something. I only have a drink of water but I know of people who actually have proper meals. I've been doing it since I was 7 years old though and its only 1 month in a year.
Happy Ramazan to all!

No it is not a health problem at all, as many people say it is only once a year and it is also good for yor health in many ways.
we are honoured to do ramazan, it is part of who we are.
It also makes us realise how lucky we are, and it brings many people together, which is always a good thing
My family do not agree with me and are against it, but I stand proud and I fast on my own because I go with what I belive in and not listen to anyone else.
I love fasting and I do it with great honour, and I wish to everyone who celebrates ramazan the best.

Hi i am new to this site and not sure how it all works yet.
But i would like to wish all who take part in Ramazan good luck, health, wealth and happiness for your future celebrations.
I am catholic and we too fast for 40 days and 40 nights but in a different way.
Good luck and may God be with us all.

Another question,
fasting = nothing passes the lips. Does this mean you are not allowed to brush your teeth?
It may seem a ridiculous question but that is something I had to ask, it was playing on my mind.
Thanks for the answers

I really wonder where you have obtained these views? I don't know ANYONE who has this view of Islam. Perhaps YOU are the one guilty of not searching well for information. Your pre-conceived ideas of non-muslim attitudes are ill-informed

take abdest so dffrnt thn brush teeth.. i stdy in muslim school 7 year..and we learn everytng so clear.. so not a reason take abdest same you brush your teeth.. both are diffrnt..
|
|
34. |
25 Sep 2006 Mon 08:28 pm |
why ? and how different ?
İn abdest water enter your mouth too,and you make sure it doesn't enter your throat,so you won't break your fast
What is so different then to brush your teeth, and make sure water won't enter your throat too ?
Beside our prophet SAV,prefered to use meswak with each abdest,he said SAV,something like'İf i can order muslims to use meswak with each abdest,i would have ordered'
So why not doing it then ?

With my respect to your school, but you can brush your teeth. Maybe some shiekhs say that you cannot because to be more far from breaking your fast. But in fact you can brush if you can keep the water away from your throat.
I can search and bring you fatawa if you want..

My muslim friend wrote this explanation for me about Ramadan - and I thought I would share it with you all....
Ramadan is the name of a month, when Muslims do not let
any foods or drinks into their bodies, from DAWN till SUNSET
If you look at the calendar, that the Muslim use
you'll find it is twelve month, like his and hers and yours
but there is a difference in that, it depends on the moon
the beginning of the month is marked, by the birth of the moon
This means that Ramadan, is not in the same season every decade
it takes 33 years to complete a cycle for Ramadan to go back to the same date
In Ramadan people fast, not only food and drink
they also do not have sex, or what to it could link (kissing & hugging with desire)
People are ordered not, to exchange swearing and insult
Particularly in this month, and if someone did insult him, to say "today I fast"
Muslims do enjoy fasting, those days for that long
Coz they are doing it to clear, themselves from all wrong
Fasting like Salat(1) and Hajj(2) and Zakat(3)
is an act of worship, like praying on a mat
In Ramadan we get closer, to close and distant relatives
for better relation with neighbors, Ramadan is causative
There's joy in sitting to the table, just before sunset
with all the family members, waiting for the sun to set
The foods usually served, are different form the usual
the sweets and the drinks, could really be unusual
Most people in Ramadan, host other people for meals
because they know for certain, this is a very good deed
In Ramadan we're strongly encouraged, to give to the poor
for this is one reason why people fast for sure
It is to remember how poor people feel
when they do not have money or any food to feed
This way we symbolically, share, the suffering of the poor
then we don't just know how they feel, but we would look for a cure
People in Ramadan get kinder and more humble
because they are strongly advised with sins not to stumble
You see even those smoker,s who can not live without it
They find it quite easy to stop, and for the command to submit
But when the sunsets, the smoker feel different
the first thing he feels for is a fag which earlier was indifferent
The streets are usually lively, more than the usual nights
They go out for sweets and corn, they visit many sites
The Mosques get filled with worshipers in Ramadan
Lots of prayers and conversations and lots of prayers to who can
People break their fast, either with dates or with water
They like it when they see it done, by their boys and their daughters
You can see this happening, in all Muslim countries
In Africa in the Middle-east, and islands like maldives
Fasting is healthy, and as one has said
God Allah surely knows, what for his slaves is best
The body relaxes after, 11 months of feeding
like after you work hard, you sit and and put your feet up.
People took "Ramadan", as a name for their kids
you can find some in Turkey, nothing that forbids
In addition there are the rewards, for fasting we expect
that is what we were promised and that is what we're going to get (inshallah)
I hope I gave a good explanation and cleared up some things
I wish a pleasant Ramadan to all the paupers and kings
(1) Salat: 5 daily prayers performed at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night.
(2) Hajj: Pilgrimage to Mecca, required once in a life time if one can afford and able to do it.
(3) Zakat: a financial system in Islam in which moneys or other properties are taken from those who qualify to give it and given to those who qualify to take it.

Just 2 remarks:
1.'In Ramadan people fast, not only food and drink
they also do not have sex, or what to it could link (kissing & hugging with desire) '
Not in Ramadan, only while we are fasting, but after breaking the fast'İftar'people can have sex, kissing, hugging and what so ever, till time of fasting again,at dawn
2.Zakat: a financial system in Islam in which moneys or other properties are taken from those who qualify to give it and given to those who qualify to take it.
İts money, and not taken, its giving by Muslim's well to obay ALLAH order in sharing the poor in the riches money
İts simply we give a percentage %2.5 from the money that we have and a year pass on it from the time we've got it.
This share we give to the poor,to help them, because we believe that money belong to ALLAH,He gave it to whom He want,we thank ALLAH HE gave it to us,and share the poors, which they could have been us if it was ALLAH well
And we rewarded from ALLAH when we give money to the poor,HE also bless our money too.
ALLAH Karim 'generous'much more than human,so he pay us back for the money we gave
And yes,its not hard for us to fast whole Ramadan, and we wait for this blessing month for the whole year
When we fast,we feel our bodies become healther, and lighter,
And we won't really starve if we didn't eat for 14 hours including the time we sleep,
We even get used to control ourselves and our desires, our anger too
İf we've been insult from other we should say 'ALLAHOME Anni Sayim'
Means ALLAH my wetness that i am fasting,so i won't reply your insult.
İts really a very beautiful month, and it brings joy and blessing to all of Muslim People .
Wish all Muslim and none Muslim people,to have a blessing happy ,and peaceful Ramadan, till the next Ramadan inşallah.

İ don't know exactly what do you mean about different,
But if it helps,we slaughter everything we eat using knife or so,and the cut would be from the neck, with sharp knife,or so,and quickly ,so it won't tourture the animal
And while doing so,we say ALLAH name, that is a must !
The butcher should say 'Besm ALLAH' İn the name of ALLAH.
Means we are not killing it for fun,we are doing by the name of ALLAH to eat.
And as for fish,we don't really slaughter them,we fish them, and it has no other way than that.
İ hope that would answer your question.
Btw,we don't only eat porks, but we don't eat anything got nail too, meaning ,like dogs, cats, things like that.
And we don't eat things has been hunted and killed by another animal too.'Doğru mu ? not just lions,Doğru ?'

Canli,i can tell u about othodox christians and our christmas fast in short lines..one week is 'on oil' and the next one is 'on water' and so on.the name says for itself-if it's 'on oil' it means that u prepare food on oil and if it's 'on water' than u boil it.we'r not allowed to eat meat (except fish),milk, eggs, chocolate, basically everything that contains ingredients previously mentioned.these r the basics..

I could write here about Christian fasting but I think it will be better if you have links and can read by yourself. This is very good article and hope it will help you to understand:

You can read in Wikipedia too:

I think for now this is enough.

Nothing, no eating, no gum, no brushing teeth, no water, no kissing, no smoking...I'm sure there are more.
But there are exceptions. Children, pregnant women, the ill, travelers, etc...
