As an avid wine lover, I must admit to being a wine snob. Although at the moment I am drinking a South African Pinotage, ( a present) I normally drink French, Spanish or Italian wines. I have tried Turkish wine but sadly I was not impressed, by the nose, the after taste and the afor taste for that matter. lol

Any wine tips would be appreciated for my next trip to Turkey so I know I am getting a good wine. A good wine needs to be reared in the perfect conditions, just enough rain, just enough sun,the right latitude and the correct method of fermetation.............. more details can be supplied if required.

I like my red wine to be strong full bodied, good with red meats and my whites I like to be crisp and dry good with fish and salads.

Aenigma, before you ask, I do not talk or look like Gilly Goulden
lol

More details required!

Is it from one vinyard or from a region of vinyards! That makes a big difference. From one vinyard - good wine, from a region of vinyards then maybe OK but not so good. All depends on the vintage. 1996 was a very good year

I am not sure, but I think 2006 will be a bad year. The weather has spoilt the crop in some regions

Sorry guys theres not much negative I can say about TR but thats one definate.

I'm not a wine expert, but from the little I can tell, some very good turkish wines are produced at Gokceada (Imvros island). I don't know if they are being sold in other places of Turkia as well, but they were really good. One trade I remember, was "barba yorgos". Excellent!

I may have missed it, but çankaya is a very popular turkish wine. Thats what they served to Bill Clinton when he was here and it seems the popularity soared after that.

Well, Kavaklıdere makes many wines. Personally, I don't like the reds as much. But I really like the çankaya. Of course feel free to try all their wines, but I am only recommending this one as being very good.

OK. Next time I will try it. I prefer reds most of the times. Actually I once tried Kavaklıdere but I don't remember which one it was. But it was OK.

Sorry to bump into this thread but I wonder.. what are good supermarket-dinner wines in Turkey?

I mean.. ın Holland you can buy a bunch of reasonable good red wines in the supermarket.. but in Turkey I have no idea what brand to look for and I want to get a good one... but have no time to go out and find a special wineshop tomorrow.. I usually run my errands in Kipa or Migros.. any suggestions for a good table wine?

Again, I'd go with the çankaya here too. I dont think it costs anymore than 15 YTL. Migros, Micro, Gima, they all carry it...

In my experience the same goes for Turkey too you know.
I liked the red Doluca and also the Sevilen wines. I found them in Carrefour, Tansaş and Migros.

Cheers!

Thank you. Ive seen the Sevilen wines, but only on the menus of restaurants, but I know a Tansaş really close here so I'll go take a look there next time. Thank you, also KeithL.

No.. Kadir has one.. and as I did shopping once on my own and had to call him to pick me up by car because I couldnt carry the bags up the hill in the pouring rain.. I decided I wont be so stubborn anymore and just go shopping together with him. BY CAR.

But having one myself for small shoppings might be a good idea actually.

I thought Çankaya was Red wine. But it's not. I ended up buying "Kalecik Karası" (a famous Turasan red wine). It is more expensive than Çankaya. I paid 26 YTL. I hope it will be a good taste.
