A Turkish Airlines plane carrying 135 people has crashed while coming in to land at Amsterdam´s Schiphol airport, according to officials and reports.

The CNN Turk TV station said at least one person was killed in the impact and 20 injured. The Boeing 737-800, which had reportedly flown from Istanbul, split into three sections as it came down in a field close to the airport. Photographs of the crashed plane shown on Turkish television showed the fuselage split near the front of the wing and the tail section sheared off.

A Turkish Airlines official at Schiphol airport told Turkey´s NTV channel that at least 50 passengers appeared to be safe. They were outside the stricken plane wading through luggage which had been strewn across the scene.

The airport, one of the main aviation hubs in Europe, confirmed the crash had taken place but gave no further details.

Airport police spokesman Rob Stenacker told Associated Press that emergency services were responding to a reported crash but could give no further details.

Claims are that the crash might be caused due to shortage of fuel. More and more airlines take as least as possible fuel to save weight.

Whatever the cause, it would appear we have another example of skillful piloting which played a big part in saving lives.

Had the pilot not managed to make that open field, the toll would undoubtedly be higher.

It´s hard - from the direction they came from - NOT to end up in an open field. Everything there is flat and there are hardly any houses.

Both pilots are dead and their bodies still stuck in the cockpit. Firemen are doing what they can to release the bodies.

By the way, have you ever flown in a plane piloted by a Turkish ex-air-force pilot? They are great, but ascent at a 80 degree angle lol while the non-air-force passengers are experiencing 4Gs in the back lol

I have read that a faulty altimeter was the cause,  in two separate papers in the UK.

Beylikdüzü street named for THY pilot

A street in the Beylikdüzü Municipality has been named after pilot Hasan Tahsin Arýsan, the captain of the Turkish Airlines (THY) flight that crash-landed in Holland last week.

The Beylikdüzü mayor, Vehbi Orakçý, announced the decision of the municipal council after a Friday morning meeting in a bulletin issued by the municipality´s press office. The former 26th Caddesi in Beylikdüzü´s Merkez neighborhood was renamed Þehit (Martyr) Pilot Hasan Tahsin Arýsan Caddesi. Orakçý said the municipal council members were deeply affected by news of the crash, which killed five Turks and four Americans. He wished for God´s mercy upon those who died in the crash and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, and a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.
