young Marika Ninou (Sotiria Leonardou) and her family flee to Greece. There, the girl's talent as a singer of rembetiko music lifts her from her lowly origins to become a celebrated headliner. Comparable to American blues, rembetiko offers a soulful outlet for marginalized people to offer their take on the human experience. Costas Ferris directs this poignant drama, which co-stars Nikos Kalogeropoulos.
Based on a true story, this uneven but engaging musical drama sweeps through a turbulent 40 years in popular singer Marika Ninou's (Sotiria Leonardou) life -- and in the history of Greece -- starting with the singer's birth in Smyrna, Turkey in 1917. Ninou was deported to Greece along with all the other Greeks in Smyrna when she was only seven years old, and a few years later, her parents started a career as a musician and a singer in a nightclub/bar. In the short space of one decade, Ninou witnesses her father murder her mother, runs away from home, has a baby, and comes back to the nightclub to sing in an act with a childhood friend and a bouzouki player, Babis. Success finally comes big-time, but then Ninou's childhood friend is exiled for political reasons, and she and Babis leave for other venues. Although Ninou carries a torch for Babis, their relationship never seems to work out, and after many years and World War II go by, she sends her daughter away to a convent school and goes on a tour in America. At last, her fame may spread beyond the boundaries of Greece -- or so it seems. Sotiria Leonardou won the prize for "Best Actress" at the 1983 Thessaloniki Film Festival, for her portrayal of Ninou, and the film itself tied for "Best Picture," and won three other awards as well (two "Best Supporting Actor" prizes, and one for music). ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Quite informtive and a bit long:
Asian and European, Greek and Turkish, Christian and Muslim – cannot be categorised. Even its name is of mixed origin. As Istanbul comes from the Greek eis teen polis, into the city, so Izmir comes from eis teen Smyrna, into Smyrna. Legendarily founded by ancient Greek colonists, Smyrna became one of the most brilliant of their cities in Anatolia, a nursery of mathematics. It was the largest and most Romanised of the cities of Asia Minor under the Romans, with many temples and a vast theatre, “the joy of Asia and the ornament of the Empire”. Saint Paul founded an early church there on his visit in 53-56 AD.

For Canli:
If maize was first sown in Cilicia, it might also explain why the Turks called it misir , "Egypt," for until 1516 Cilicia was controlled by the Mamluks of Egypt. The Arabic name for maize used in Egypt, "Syrian sorghum," would also be explained, because under the Mamluks Cilicia was administered from Syria. After 1517, Cilicia, Syria and Egypt all formed part of the Ottoman Empire; anything proceeding therefrom was "Turkish."

High-level research in Turkey

On the Black Sea coast of Turkey, the mountains sweep right down to the shore. The towns may have been spoilt by shoddy development – even fabled Trebizond, now known as Trabzon – but the mountains rise pristine and luxuriant towards the cloud that frequently covers their peaks. Here, between Trabzon and the Georgian border, lies the massif of the Kaçkar. Hazel orchards and the close-picked bushes of tea plantations cover the lower slopes. Higher up, unbroken forest clothes the ravines. Streams and waterfalls abound. Ferns and rhododendrons thrive in the moist air. So does the Pontic azalea, whose honey reputedly drives men mad.
