I read that there is a proposal to change Turkey's very strict law against "insulting Turkishness". It seems there will be a great deal of resistance to this by Nationalists. Article is also in TDN.

Turkey is expected to amend a heavily criticised law which makes "insulting Turkishness" illegal, in order to improve its chances of entering the EU.

Mehmet Ali Sahin, the country's justice minister, said on Monday: "The work [on the draft] has been finalised. I believe the proposal could be submitted to parliament this week."

The EU has put pressure on Turkey to change the law, article 301 in the penal code, that is criticised as a threat to freedom of speech in Turkey.

The law is seen as a major stumbling block to Turkey's accession to the EU.


Turkey's centre-right government has said it will change article 301, but critics say that this has not materalised for fear of a nationalist backlash.

Breaking the law can mean a sentence of up to four years in jail.

Change of wording

Sahin refused to comment on the nature of the changes to the law before they were discussed at a cabinet meeting on Monday.

Aynur Dogan is perhaps the most recognizable of many Kurdish singers who are creating a new sound in Turkey. She was born in the southeast corner of the country in the Kurdish-influenced region of Tunceli, where she grew up with the traditional music, the myths and the poetry of the Alevites, a religious minority that are still very present in everyday life there. In 1992 Aynur’s family moved, to Istanbul, where she then attended the music school of Arif Sag, who is known as the guru of saz, the traditional Turkish instrument. In recent years the albums “Seyir” and “Kece Kurdan” have earned her a reputation that extends beyond Kurdish circles and has even commanded international admiration. She released her most recent album "Nupel" in 2006.

Martyrs frozen to death 93 years ago commemorated
Turkey commemorated the 93rd death anniversary of thousands of Turkish martyrs frozen to death on the Allahüekber Mountains during World War I, 93 years ago, with a ceremony held in the Kars' Upper Sarıkamış village yesterday.


Due to inclement weather conditions and a lack of necessary equipment to deal with cold weather, the Ottomans suffered a heavy defeat at the Battle of Sarıkamış during World War I. The Russians came out victorious over the Ottomans in the Caucasus Campaign during the war.

The war aimed to recapture the eastern city of Kars and the port of Batum, which were lost to the Russian during the Russo-Turkish War in 1877. However, Ottoman forces suffered as many casualties from the winter as from the Russians on the Allahüekber Mountains.

The Ottoman Army, headed by Enver Pasha, began its march on Dec. 22, 1914. Enver Pasha decided to put into effect a grand plan to destroy the Russians at Sarıkamış. The Germans supported the plan with the hopes of diverting the Russian forces to the Caucasian front, but some senior Turkish commanders opposed it. The decisive battle took place on Dec. 29 and final fighting ended on Jan. 17, 1915. As a result of the battle, both sides suffered heavy casualties. The Ottoman 3rd Army was reduced to 20,000 from 95,000 while the Russians lost 16,000 soldiers and another group of 12,000 due to illnesses and frostbite.
