Did anyone see that programme by Louise Rednapp the other night?
Basically she went down to a size zero for a tv show....
She felt sick, drained both emotionally and physically, and looked unwell.

Does anyone else feel the pressures to become this size?

I find that even though I have a nice figure that at times I feel fat due to all of the expectations. Also other people all have different views on what we should look like.
I find that when I am in England I am called skinny, but when I go to Turkey some people tell me to lose weight! I am 5ft 6 and a bit and a size 10 in clothes! I find all of this very confusing......................
How can I be one thing in one place and another in another place.
Has anyone else experianced this when they have been in Turkey or any other country?

I came back to UK and told everyone that I was on a diet as I'd been told I needed to be , and they were furious and told me if anything that I was underweight!

yeh i saw it..shes a sze eight and theres nothing wrong with that size...there have been a whole host of size zero programmes lately..

hun if you are a size 10 you have nothing to worry about.but I know how you feel.I'm a 10/12 and the same thing bothers me. I think we are too demanding and picky of ourselves

I don't understand the sizing system you're using (is there some kind of converter anywhere?) but I understand what you're saying, except in my case it's the other way around. When I'm in Turkey people constantly tell me I'm too skinny yadda yadda but in Denmark my family tells me I shouldn't eat too much, watch out you don't get fat etc. Mostly it doesn't affect me because it's obvious that the only person who can judge you is yourself. If you feel comfortable in your own skin there's nothing people should tell you. Unfortunately it does affect me sometimes but I'm trying to learn how to laugh about it.

Size 0 is USA sizing, which is the same as size 4 in the UK. No idea what it would be in other European Countries. But at a guess, it would be someone who weighs around 6 stone or around 40kg. When I was a comfortable 55kg I was a size 10 (UK size) now I am a tad over that and a size 12.

That's indeed very small, anorexic small, even. If you were a size 0 in my country, you'd have to go the children's department. I found a conversion table (http://www.usatourist.com/english/tips/sizes.html) and according to that the smallest size generally avaliable here is USA size 4.

Which translates to small. My guess is size 10 is the most common - I don't understand why somebody would considder that fat, unless they have a disorted body image :-S

Yes,it is about distorted body image. It's not fat but if someone is constantly comparing themselves to other women, especially celebrities then this can affect that too I guess. It's all about this search for perfection that none of us will ever find. I for one have always battled with my weight regardless of my size and I admit that I am obsessed with my weight and I know it's stupid and I shouldn't but it really is something that eats away at your mind cosntantly. We all know that appearances mean a lot in this day and age and weight is one thing that is easily manipulated.

just came back from my walk and I really enjoyed it!
If I'm honest the reason I'm so upset about this is because when I was younger I was always teased and bullied at times over my weight, I was always the skinny kid.
The children at school used to tell me to be careful or my legs would snap!

As I've grown older well since I've got married especially I've slowly been putting on weight. I feel for the first time in my life like a real woman! I love having an inch to pinch so to speak!
I've finally got curves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And now due to the press etc I'm BIG! My head is totally messed up!

I have a constant battle with this....... I always have this little voice warning me of how I used to look and how I don't want to be skinny minny as I was known before. I used to struggle to find nice clothes.

My mum was round earlier and she said that I could do with losing a few pounds and exercising. My husband loves me whatever. My colleagues at work think that I'm perfect and often say they wish they had my figure. Some people in Turkey called me fat.

WHAT THE HELL???????????????????????????????

See what I said? The mind.......... ignore everyone and listen to yourself. If you are satisfied then tell everyone else to shut up!

It's good to hear such positive feedback! I love my food and it's a shame that there are people out there who automatically think its their right to tell you if you are over or under weight! I was feeling really confident and happy untill this happened. It's happened before when I lived there, one woman said "hello Susie you are fat!" When she greeted me needless to say she was the sort whos hips stuck out and lived her life on a diet!
My hubby is gorgeous and he wouldn't want me if I was this way I know, he also tells me that people say this to me because I have a beautiful face and they are jealous because it doesn't matter how much they diet exercise etc, they will never look like me! This was the reaction of my colleagues aswell, its nice and reassuring but as said before its how I feel that counts, and at the end of the day its how you are inside as a person that is the most important really.

so right

First of all let me say that average size for women in the UK is a 14.Now most people on this discussion are saying they are around size 10 which quite alot smaller than the average.I am not skinny and i never will be however i am not particularly over weight either.I am trying to eat a balanced diet and do some more exercise. This is because i want to and not because i feel pressure to.It makes me so sad to see women on here talking about themselves as fat when in fact they are probably under weight and as we all know no man likes a super skinny woman because whats the point of being a woman if you don't have curves in the right places. My fiance says he prefers a woman with 'a bit of meat on her bones' haha i guess what he is saying is that to have a womanly figure is sexy and a good thing.Furthermore i know what its like to be told by certain people in Turkey that they wish i would lose a bit of weight because they feel then i would be perfect. But the truth is how is any woman ever expected to be smaller when everwhere she goes she is being fed more and more food by every relative she meets.
Having said all that i think its important to remember its how we feel about ourselves that is important not how someone else tells us they would like us to be.I feel they would be better spending their time and energy on improving and learning about themselves rather than worrying about how many pounds another person clocks up when they stand on the scales in the morning.

I would also like to pose another question to everyone generally :

What do you think is general consensus in Turkey about what is the 'right' weight to be? i mean most of the girls one can see walking around Turkey are quite small to UK or US standards of average dress size as i mentioned in my previous post average size in the UK is 14.

For example would a girl size 14 be considered fat in turkey?

i suppose it depends which group of people you are asking and i have read somewhere that it is seen by older people in turkish society that to be a bit heavier is an attractive feature...would that be correct in your views?

You're raising a very interesting point here. I'll be waiting for answers I think you are right about older people but I'm not sure if it applies to the younger generation. I have seen a vague tendency towards this in the south east, where some appear to be proud that they are heavy. They are always commenting on my size 4 (though I'm still curvy) but still they admire the lean women on tv.

Lass - tell them all to take a running jump. If your health is good then your weight unless you fall into the obsese scale on the BMI chart is your own decision and lifes for living not listening to picky people who have to have someone to pick on to make their own life happy.

While the younger generation in Turkey tends to be thin - just wait till the horomones of menopause and the child bearing years catch up with them. At a size UK 16 and 5"4" (Im very short in my country) at 60 I am much taller than my Turkish counterparts who are all about 5" but weigh a lot less - but still have similar measurements. Im just a solid style of person

Body shapes tend to change with diet. I grew up in a country with a tendancy to eat lots of red meat and our population is basically pear shaped - big hips and bust. We have been well fed for generations and thats the way nature has rewarded us!. Turks have for generations lived on a different diet and have a different shape - usually no hips, and my generation is quite short. The next generation are getting taller but still very rarely do you see a woman of 5"8 or more which my 90 year old mother still is.

Just be confident in your own body and tell them to go jump (politely of course).

my housemate is skinnier than me and thinks she's fat and i'm skinny. i'm a size 8.

i've told her many times that she doesn't need to lose anymore weight at all. but she's on this mission to reach a particular "goal weight".

because not just measurements count.......

"An hourglass figure has long been perceived to be the ideal figure for a woman to have.
But New York University researchers have found that to be found attractive, a woman had to move in a feminine way - swaying her hips.
Men, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper found, were more attractive if they moved with a "shoulder swagger".
The waist-hip ratio has long been thought to be key to Western perceptions of attractiveness, with a small waist and bigger hips the ideal combination.
Marilyn Monroe, and now Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez are famous examples of women with that figure.
Its popularity may be down to media images, or because Western women do not need to have strong and muscular bodies in order to carry out manual labour, unlike women in developing countries.
But the US research suggests they would never have achieved their sex symbol status if they did not move in the right way.
The team carried out a series of studies involving over 700 participants who were shown a variety of animations and videos of people moving.
Some showed shadow figures, where it was not possible to see if it was a man or a woman, while others obviously showed a man or a woman.
No matter which format was being used, the participants rated women or "female" figures as more attractive if their hips swayed as they walked, while men were more attractive if they had the characteristic shoulder movement.
The research also confirmed the waist-hip ratio assumption, with women's attractiveness being rated higher if their waist-hip ratio was small and men's being higher if their ratio was large.
But Kerri Johnson and Louis Tassinary who led the research, say their work shows attractiveness is not as simple as the difference between two measurements.
Writing in PNAS, the researchers said: "The body's shape and motion provoke basic social perceptions, biological sex and gender - ie masculinity or femininity respectively.
"The compatibility of these basic precepts predicts perceived attractiveness."
The team say their findings only apply to Western cultures, and other societies will judge attractiveness depending on their most prized feminine and masculine traits.
Dr George Fieldman, principal lecturer in psychology at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College said: "This is quite plausible.
"It's the movement which attracts, and not just the waist-hip ratio per se."
He added: "It would be interesting to see what the ideal combination of measurements and wiggle is." "

exactly, and im sorry but a size 0???? Way to small, unless you are in 5th grade.

I have been anorexic skinny..... and 200 lbs. My weight fluctuates more then anyone I know. So for me it is something constantly on my mind. Wich is a real bummer, but I say all the time that if I could change anything about my appearance it would be the way I see it, not something physical

I admire the people that are a bit chubby and still aren't constantly trying to cover, and I would rather be chubby and have that confidence then be thin and a prisoner of my insecurities!

Many girls get eating disorders though... dont they robyn....

yes they do gusel_kiz and partly because they do see girls that are so skinny, such as yourself that say they are fat, if you are fat what does that make the rest of us?..anyway I just have issues with this whole subject

I still have curves and wouldnt class myself as skinny.
Think of the meaning of the word.. "Skinny". Like just skin and no meat..? I have meat!! hehe
But joking to one side, I think that this whole issue has been rather over exaggerated as it depeneds on a certain person whether they are fat, skinny etc. Why do people care so much about other people's weight anyway? Maybe it has a lot to do with jealousy, bilmiyorum.

And you asked me what I think of the rest of you.. well.. physically talking: i wouldnt really know as I have never met any of you and I also am aware that you can be a size 14 and not be "fat".
Look at Mariah Carey for example.. a curvey and even heavy example of a woman but phoah what a beautiful figure! She's about size 14 I think, maybe all the size 14s here are the same.
Other than that, I do like most of the people I have met on this site in the last 3 days.. Some however, have been rather rude; on the forums and in private messages.

Ama hayat böyledir kızlar, ne yapalım yani... Boş ver gitsin ha?

a) its ridiculous that you are a size 6 and still think you need to lose weight
b)everyone feels they should look like this or like that
c)oo god knows I'm just starting to get annoyed haha

For the sake of God, why does everyone think Im someone else?

I wrote the name Ceyda because this actress shares my surname. I dont usually use my real name on the internet, I generally write this but as you are a friendly bunch I thought Id write my real name in my profile.

I dont know who this Ceyda is but I would really like it if everyone stopped thinking Im someone else.

Thanks şimdiden.

Of course it revolves around jealousy, I'm sure there is no question of that. We all want to look as good as someone else no matter the reason.

Maybe I am not understanding what you refer to as a US size 0, because I am from the US and trust me if you are a size 0, you are not a curvy girl, unless of course you are 3 feet tall, it is VERY tiny, and not just by my standards but by everyones, that is why it is not a number

In any case I would prefer to be that over a size 14 (i would give up the curves for it )

MODIFIED: also I would like to say that there is nothing wrong with you being proud of your size, and congradulations! After all skinny or fat, if you feel good about your weight you should be proud!

AS an older memeber of this site, I would like to add, when I was 16 or 17, I weighed around 8 stone and was size UK 10. (In fact into my forties I only ever weighed around 8½ stone) Now someone my height and around 8 stone would be a size 8 or even a six. I am now a size 12 which really would be a have been at least a size fourteen, 30 or so years ago.

What we have to remember is that sizing has altered to suit the changing shape of women and I agree with Robyn (on this occasion, there is always a first and a second ) anyone who is a UK size 6 should not be thinking about losing weight, and neither would someone a size 10.

Why are you all so hung up about your size, when you get to my age you have to accept a little more of what you are. As your metabolism natually slows down, you dont get a lot of choice, it happens over night.

8 stone = 112Lb = 51kg
9 stone = 126lb = 57kg
10 stone = 140lb = 63½kg
11 stone = 154lb = 70kg

That is a bit more acurate, but sizing OK.
