i do the same. i can never turn my back to them, even if i know that some of them have more money than i have.
here, the favorite places of beggars are the churches and the traffic lights. u can see so many kids, even in winter, without shoes, with no heavy clothes, freezing and crying for a euro.
"begging industry" is the most profitable bussiness in greece. the government advices that we shouldn't give money to these kids, cause when we do, we encourage their parents to send them out in the streets more. If we stopped, they say, these kids would be staying at home, safe. but this is not true. their parents abuse them anyway. and if they stop sending them out to beg, they ll definately send them out to steal. and...can u say no to a 5 year old kid who is begging u for a few cents?
my kid has everything. and i feel guilty for that, whenever i see those poor people in the streets. so, the least i can do is to give a euro or two to each. even if they are not really poor, they deserve those euros, for the cold and the humiliation they suffer out there.
