" بسم الله والله أكبر [ اللهم منك ولك ] اللهم تقبل مني "

it means something like: "by the name of god, and Allah is great, this is from you and sacrified for u, accept it from me"

Why is it awful sacrificing a sheep or a goat? Millions of animals die around the world all the time for the same purpose = food.
What's the big deal?

For non-vegetarians there might be not a problem.

the purpose of sacrificing here is really not only food...
first of all... its a belief for a moslim and as we are talking about freedom in religions...that is another case actually...

the meaning of sacrifising here is:
its done by the wealthy and rich people... and they do it for the thanksgiving to the God by the things they have... and they hand out the big part of it to the poor and needed people around... and they take a little part from it...

and its a belief, acceptable or not...

Sui had the point. It is a deeply symbolic gesture, and it exists in other religions/confessions too. For example, Orthodox Christians say the prayer too if they kill their Cristhmas animal themselves. I respect vegetarians for I was vegetarian for years, but sacrificing is quite another thing. (Just remember India until several decades ago... vegetarianism plus suttee. Anyway, it's not ours to comment, I think.) Some traditions are as old as the human race, and are far more meaningful than we can even suppose.

Regards to everybody here, I hope I haven't offended anybody!

P. S. (Not obligatory to read it!) If anybody is curios to know why I quitted my vegetarianism, that happened when my parents realized I was becoming more and more aggresive. Then we read some medical studies and found out that people who were not genetically predisposed for vegetarian food could start to excrete certain enzyme which provokes agressiveness. (By the way, Hitler was a vegeterian too.) It doesn't mean all that people are agressive, just be careful not to judge too sharp...

To Joey - my harshest critic lately - I am a vegetarian but would never impose my views on anyone else and do respect that other people eat meat. I am only against the harsh treatment of animals. I do respect traditions, even if I do not agree with them.

You're absolutely right, aenigma. We shouldn't be here if we are not able to respect each other's opinions. You couldn't say it shorter and more exact.

They sacrifice the sheep and keep 1/3 of the meat for his family and give 3/4 to the poor (usually some needy families they know)..

as a matter of fact,no,they don't give 3/4 to the poor.
it goes like this 1/3 you keep for yourself,1/3 you give to your family,to make the family ties stronger,1/3 for the poor,to make them celebrate as same as you do.

And this sacrifice is or was for a reason.

İt is for the reason that,ALLAH kept İsmael HZ,the son of İbrahim HZ 'İbraham the prophet' kept him safe.

İt is well known that, when a prophet dream of something,it was like an order from ALLAH.'Rüya' we call it
So ALLAH wanted to test İbrahim HZ faith, and made him dream that he slaughtered his son 'İsmael HZ'

So İbrahim HZ went to his son,and told him,İsmael HZ told him,do as you've been orderd father.

So he took him,in Arafat 'its a mountain which Muslim go and Haj to it in Makka '
And he layed him down, and before he start the killing ALLAH brought a great sheep from the sky odering İbrahim HZ to stop.
'و فديناه بكبش عظيم'
Means,WE 'ALLAH' saved him and will slaughter a great sheep instead.

So since then,we celebrate that ALLAH saved prophet İsmale HZ from being slaughtered, buy doing same, and sharing the meat of this sheep with all the people, family,or poors.
