Hi..
Can some native speaker (or anyone who knows for that matter) please explain the difference between DOST and ARKADAS(h). ? I realised that in Turkish there are lots of nuances in the language and i really like this.. so i like to know them
Do those words mean the same or is there a different feeling behind them?
Thanks in advance
xxx Lello

yes, there's a difference.
You can find an arkadaş easily but it's very hard to find a dost. Either you don't have any or you have just a few.
Dost is more than arkadaş, because you're tied to dost with stronger bonds and it usually lasts a life time in both the good days and the bad days. but sometimes there can be "yalancı dostlar", fake ones...
I hope my explanation means something.

Meltem has already covered the main difference. There are a few details left to add.
1. dost has this meaning while arkadaş hasn't:
For a woman when you say "Onun bir dostu var" (She has a friend (dost)" you are implying that the woman is in relationship with somebody and they are not married. Could be even that one of them is married with somebody else.
2. arkadaş can be used with kız or erkek while dost cant.
kız arkadaş: girlfriend
erkek arkadaş: boyfriend
3. Dostum (not dost) is more common in daily speech. Dostum means my friend or buddy.
OK man take it easy. Tamam dostum sakin ol.
Hi, mate whats up? Selam dostum na'ber?
4. In written language arkadaşım is more common than dostum.
My dear friend,... > Sevgili arkadaşım ...

It is a mannish speech and is more to use with strangers only. In the past the word was common and meant friend but now we use it only for strangers we just met.
Hey ahbap, buraya baksana sen.
Hey you, I said look here.
Bana bak ahbap, beni sinir etme.
Listen to me man, don't drive me crazy.
Tamamdır ahbap.
It's ok man.

yaren isn't common and I think it should be skipped by learners. Most of the Turks wouldnt understand and if they do they would misunderstand it as it sounds related to yar (lover). Just forget about this one.
Ahbap can also be skipped if you don't like a strong language.

arkadaş and dost means friend. we just explained the hidden meaning behind the word "dost". it simply has a more powerful meaning than arkadaş. and of course the "lover" meaning too.
