I will try to give examples to explain you teh difference, but as Im not a native there may be mistakes (what a great help I am )

Pazardan neler aldın?
Pazardan zeytin, peynir falan aldım.

Pazardan beyaz peynir gibi bir şey aldım.

What did you buy at the market?
At the market I bought olives, cheese and such (yani, you know, the usual things, for the breakfast).

At the market I bought something like White Cheese. (its not white cheese, but it looks like it, or the taste is nearly the same.)


Manavdan neler aldın?
Manavdan elma falan aldım.

What did you buy at the grocery store?
I bought apples and such. (apple, pear, banana.. fruit).

Ben elma gibi bir şey aldım.
I bought something like an apple (its not an apple! But it looks like one!).

Even though it looks like Gibi, Falan is different.

Gibi means similar things.

But falan means "etc".

I hope you know the difference between "similar" and "etc".
Falan can be translated as "blah blah" or just put an "etc"

It is used when you don't want to say everything in a list.
And letting you guess the rest.

A:Manavdan ne aldın?
B:Elma, armut falan. (Usual things that you buy from a grocery. It may include vegetables too, not only fruits.)

A:Manavdan ne aldın?
B:Elma, armut gibi şeyler. (Apple, pear and similar things. All or most of them are fruits.)

Hope this helps a bit more.

Edit: Gibi bir şey and gibi şeyler are different in meaning.
..... gibi bir şey :=: something looks like ..... (You can't find the word to explain what it is. But it looks like....)

But you should remember that "filan" has a negative meaning. I mean: when you use it, it means: "That is not important to mention all of them. They are all the same(not special)"

So, if you want to thank people, you should not say their names and then "filan". It is like "they are all crap"

haha,i am sorry about that, but i really try to use what i learning , so i hope you can forgive me,thank you for everything you do for me,and sorry for something i make you not happy.

i guess you are happy to forgive me, such as, sometimes i learn some not good word from my turkish friends, and i will said to him, he is happy, he will say i am smart, but of course , not the real bad word, just such as kotu or yalan, hehehehehe!
