Quoting Roswitha:
Arab nationalists such as Saddam Hussein and Islamist groups such as al-Qaeda both see close and highly charged parallels with the medieval period. Saddam chooses to portray himself as the modern-day successor to Saladin. He has had himself depicted next to the emir on postage stamps. In huge murals, he stands above tanks rolling to victory; alongside him is Saladin pictured above his charging cavalry. The message is clear: just as Saladin vanquished the Western invader, so Saddam will, too.
Saladin has become one of the major heroes of Islam. The needs of modern-day politics have dictated that both he and the crusading movement as a whole remain highly charged images – an enduring and powerful legacy to the 21st century.

There is difference between Saladin and Saddam .cause the first liberated Jerusalem(Qudes )while Saddam destroyed his people and his country,he is the only thought that it resembles or behind or like Salah al-Din because he was mad by greatness
so only the truth in this article that Saladin has become one of the major heroes of Islam

Saladdin was not an Arab....He was of Kurdish origin.
The rest of Crusaders were taken care of by Turkish forces.

Yes he was not Arab, was Kurdish.
But the rest of Crusades were taken care of under the Osmanlı Authority, not the Turkish forces,it was Muslims forces from all the Osmanlı Empire.

Turks facing crusaders were basically Seljuks...Ottoman Empire was not around yet..
Crusaders were much less enthusiastic and considerably politer in Ottoman era !

I do not know a Sultan commanding Saladdin...He was a pretty independent ruler himself.
Though he was a very powerful ruler all his life, there was not enough funds in his legacy...to have a proper grave built for him, when he died.

I've noticed recently Salahddin being identified as being Kurdish, but I think he identified himself with being Muslim first, not Kurdish. His greatness was in his ability to unite the Muslims to fight against the Crusaders.
