But I think it happens everywhere.

Sorry geniuda, it's nothing personal, but I hate such apologetic, irresponsible statements as: "it happens everywhere". Yes, to a certain degree it may happen everywhere, but to WHAT degree it happens - does make a difference! Fear of being raped or kidnapped in Mexico city in the daylight is a little bit different then fear of walking alone at night on a deserted street! Even though you may say "it's the same underlying issue".

Quoting elibrody:

Oh well Mexico City is a bad city really it's full of insecurity and of robery and whatnot
And that's how everything is on the south I live in the north and in the north is where the mois technological rich an save cities are located

Of course as it was mentioned before this is a thing that happens everywhere which talks about the bad goverment out countries have but that's another topic

Acapulco is very safe, I recomend never to go to Mexico City tho

I agree with you Elibrody,it all depends which part Mexico are we talking about. Mexico City is not too safe anymore, back in 2006 the population was 8,720,916,considered one of the biggest cities in the world. Terrible, very crowded city.Obviously you can find all type of people in bigger cities. I was born and rised in Mexico and in my town I never experienced something like that. Yes, we must admit that many men tend to tell you all kind of 'compliments' while you walk on the street, but I never saw or experienced someone going beyond that. But I think it happens everywhere.

Well, you are right, it's mostly a lot of talk and eye "balling". It's a violation. In my travel experience in Mexico, and I've been in many parts of Mexico", I'll take Turkey anytime over Mexico in regards to male harassment. Mexican males have no shame in smacking their lips, hooting and paying what they think are compliments to females. I think they almost think it's mandatory. I'm in California, we have a lot of very fresh right from the border Mexicans here.

I have a Mexican neighbor who scares females half to death with his "compliments". He hoots and hollars "compliments". I've told him many times in both English and Spanish, but he continues... with things like "pssst whistle guapa!" Then if he doesn't want to understand, he pretends not to understand either English or Spanish....and I know exactly what I'm saying....he doesn't want to know!

The $#@ guapa and whistle is annoying. In the East it's the "Mamacita" and the kissing sound, I HATE that!!!, I'm not your D**m mama and then too the leering at someone and relating them to being their mama annoys me even more.....how dare they?

I have been throughout Mexico at least 8 times now and what I have found is the men are a little more forward. However, I didn't feel harrassed or threatened what so ever. In fact, they seemed more personable than most American men..hahaha

On the otherhand..I do have a friend here in the states that complains all the time that in her neighborhood, alot of Mexicans live and they are always staring at her and yelling things out their windows. It makes her feel very uncomfortable...Maybe they think their still in Mexico..

While were talking about Mexican men, I do have a comment/question. There is a perception about Mexican men at least were I live. The perception is they treat their wifes and girlfriends with little respect. I wonder where this perception stems from. Any insight?

I think it also has to do with your tolerance level..I may not be offended, but other women might. I just have learned to tune them out..Besides I don't have a clue what their saying, nor do I want to know. lol

Well harassment to you, maybe different to me. I don't find a man sitting on a subway with his legs spread apart as harassment. Now if someone is whisteling and yelling things at me, I have two decisions. I either ignore them or tell them to shut the f%&k up. I would rather choose my battles carefully and I choose not to have an altercation with a Mexican men on Mexican soil. But believe me, I have no problems holding my own here on American soil.

teaschip1....As a blond you represent the power elite and would pobably be perceived as the woman of a powerful man. To seriously bother you could mean serious problems. Is your friend brown haired? Anyway, that's my take on things...and it's based on some extensive knowledge of the culture.

Wow!!! That's reaaaaaaaaaly interesting!!! This is so backwards and stupid!!! lol But I guess it's one of the exceptions as to where blondes can feel relatively safe... which is a good thing, though so opposite to Turkey!

It was not about a man sitting on a subway with his legs spread apart, it was about a man with his legs spread apart and pressing mine...do you get it now?

Also, Mexico is on American soil North America....perhaps you mean United States of America soil...aka USA...soil.
